I want to build my first ship...but need suggestions on which ship would be the best for a first timer. I want to build one of DeAgo's ships. I live in the USA...so my choices are the Victory, SOTS, San Felipe, Akagi or Surprise. Any help would be appreciated...including non-DeAgo ships. Thanks. Hi there, I have built a few wooden ships. The big benefit of the DeAg ships is the instructions. Most wooden kits come with plans and often badly translated instructions or pictorial instructions that dont go through plank bending or fairing the hull etc...
I would say SOTS or Surprise.I am a SOTS subscriber and I am very impressed with the quality of the parts and the detailed instructions.
If you are comfortable working with wood go for it.There is considerably more work involved in a ship than a plastic or resin model kit, but with good instructions anyone with some patience can make a stunning model.
There are also lots of really talented modelers on this forum that can help you through any problems you may encounter.
Carl
I see you have the spitfire kit so you must be OK working with wood!!!

I would echo carl's comments and if ubsure go for one that has a big following. Victory has realms of build diaries, help support etc. Similar with SoS as that has only fairly recently finished for uk subscribers that were in from the start. Either of those 2 would guarantee you loads of support if you actually found it was needed but again instructions for both are brilliant. No experience of the Surprise so unable to add my comments as i have not had the privilage to collect or build that one. Happy Modelling

Hi, big decisions for you to make and as a first time builder of wooden ships the choices you have open to you can be staggering.... Out of all of the kits the SOTS and Victory is two that should be seriously considered. They are both beautiful builds and the support on this forum that is available to you is second to none. As for instructions, my recommendation would have to be the Victory, you will not find a better set of clear and concise instructions with any other kit out there. My choice for a first timer would have to be the Victory because of the instructions alone, next to that the SOTS..... Wouldn't go with another kit until you have the first one under your belt, but that of course is just my opinion. Hope this helps you decide. Good luck and regards Alan

Hi. My choice if I was starting off again I would get the Victory as the instructions are second to none. There is plenty of info out there on the ship too. The Surprise is a hard ship to build for a first build. I started with San Francisco 2 then HMS Surprise. Hope this helps. Chris. On the bench 1/350 Revell Tirpitz Platinum Edition (Pontos PE and Wooden deck) plus extra Eduard PE set and extra MK1 door sets.

I would have to echo other people and say Victory is the way to go. The instructions are aimed at novice builders taking you through every step, the build materials are easier to use than SOTS which has a bamboo hull (or atlas the first UK release did may be different in the USA?) Jase The USA SOTS does have bamboo for the hull.I have never used that material before.I may replace with another wood if it is tricky Carl
