Way back in the ‘Good Ol’ Days (I’m thinking probably the 1970’s) Tamiya, one of the most innovative of the model kit manufacturers of the time brought out a range of individual 1/25th scale military figures. Each one was basically a scaled up 1/35 scale figure from their existing range complete with a neat polygonal stand to finish it off. I’m trying to remember what the figures were as I can’t find any mention of them whatever on the net – even ebay is devoid of any for sale! I can only assume the series was very short lived.Blink
From what I can remember, there was a running German machine gunner carrying an MG34 and ammo box, a kneeling German with an MG40, and American walking with a BAR, General Patton and I think a Rommel wearing a greatcoat. There may well have been others that I’ve forgotten.
Anyhow, back then my interests were more sci-fi and horror than purely military and I bought a load of these figures, which were buried under varying amounts of Milliput putty to create a collection of film characters. Back then I was really pleased with the set I created, this was, unfortunately long before the advent of digital reference material and in most cases my inspiration came from the pause button on the VCR – (and it wasn’t a very good pause either!) Despite the lines of ‘noise’ across the screen I came up with the ten figures shown below, two of them you might well realise did NOT start out as Tamiya figures at all – they were Britains Zoo Animals!BigGrin For decades this collection has remained on a cupboard shelf in my bedroom, they’ve had about three dustings in the last forty years although that stopped when various delicate bits began to fall off!Blushing Well they’ve had another dust off and I’ve glued back the missing bits so here they are, 1/25th scale is about 70mm in height and just for a bit of fun I’ve masked out the name plates from the pics – see if you can identify the characters and/or the films or TV series they came from. As I said, they’re not 100% accurate but some should be easy enough – for the others you’d need to be as obsessed with the genre as I was back then (or still am to be truthful!)Flapper
Best of luck and I’ll put the answers up in a few days!

Robin.

He he! You're both doing really well! I won't give the full names just yet but a clue for No.2 is "Sean Connery!"BigGrin You are right about those metal figures too, that's definitely the same poses for the MG34 and MP40 (where did I get MG40 from!Blushing )

So the answer to Number 1 is, as Jase correctly said a Federation Trooper from the BBC Cult Sci-Fi series “Blake’s 7”.BigGrin
For those of you too young to remember this series, it revolved around the adventures of Blake –a human rights activist who was framed and convicted by the Federation (the baddies in this particular universe) and sentenced to live imprisonment (I think, unless it was death?) anyway, en-route to either his prison cell or execution, the prison ship runs across a huge apparently abandoned warship from an unknown race. Unwilling to risk his own crew, the Captain of the prison ship selects Blake and six other criminals to board the vessel (and get killed if things go bad!) Blake and his associates manage to board the ship however, get the master computer re-booted and promptly steal the ship and play a game of cat and mouse, annoying the Federation as much as possible.Cool
The rest of the series is about the exploits of Blake and his crew in their newly re-named ship the “Liberator” ever pursued by the sexy female Supreme Commander of the Federation ‘Servalan’. For it’s time, the series was quite dark in nature, Blake didn’t always come out on top and there were several crew changes as some of them were killed off! The Troopers formed the mainstay of the Federation similar to the Stormtroopers of Star Wars. There were also female Troopers used as pilots who were genetically altered into a form of Vampire, able to sustain themselves by capturing small animals and draining their blood which they then ingested through an artificial ‘gullet’ in their chests – not nice people at all!
The model was formed from the General Patton figure with a Milliput face mask and a scratch built plasticard gun. Overall, he’s not too far off the original! (I’m not sure if they all had those big badges on the uniform or not!)
When the series had overstayed it’s viewing figures the BBC killed it off along with the entire crew in one last horrendous shoot out with the Federation Troopers – the last to fall being Avon, the sneakiest one of the lot!
Coming next, we're off the the Fortress of Ultimate Darkness!Blink

I remember tuning into that early evening weeknights when the choice of tv channels was very limited. I seem to remember enjoying it but not sure it would still have the same appeal now. I remember two characters in particular - Avon (nothing to do with makeup LOL ) - what a right old misery and troublemaker he was BigGrin . Paul Daro i think played that part. The other was their computer who i think was called Orake? He was the opposite - a right know it all if ever there was one LOL .

Then we get on the liberator itself which could well be classed as one of those true classic spaceship designs. Not sure it was ever put out by the plastic model companies but there were good examples under the "garage kits" brand and were the sort of kits Comet Miniatures used to stock. Comet miniatures have long since closed but carry under in a smaller way under the guise of Timeless Hobbies.

For anyone interested in what the liberator looked like have a look at this ebay item number

Well remembered Tony! Yep, Avon was the one everybody most expected to stab Blake in the back whenever it suited him! The computer was Orac and like you said, he might have been a small transparent flashing box but he probably had more smug arrogance than any other AI on the screen, before or after!
Researching these old characters is certainly shaking my memory cells too Alan!BigGrin

And so to Number 2! Tony, you were so close when you said a Monty Python film as the answer to this one is “Time Bandits” (Well done Kev!)Cool a fantasy film which was a Python film in all but name!
The Time Bandits in the title refers to a gang of dwarves who were employed by the “Supreme Being” (God) to repair the cracks in the fabric of the universe. Being a very opportunistic bunch they realised that by stealing God’s map of creation, they could use the cracks to travel through time stealing treasures from key points in history. The hero of the story is a young boy named Kevin whose bedroom contains one of the cracks!Blink After being woken up by a fully armoured knight on horseback riding out of his wardrobe, Kevin stocks up with food and his polaroid camera and waits for the next apparition which turns out to be the gang of dwarves on the run from God (B-B-bring back the M-mmap you stole fr-from m-m-me!)He didn't have a stutter - it just comes across like that in the film! The gang finds that Kevin’s bedroom wall slides away revealing an infinite corridor down which they flee taking Kevin with them.
If I remember the sequences correctly it goes like this:
They arrive at Napoleon’s camp during one of his conquests where the diminutive dictator, fed up with being surrounded by tall Generals (“It’s like being at the bottom of a bloody well!”) makes the dwarves new Generals (“For a bit”) During supper the gang gets old Boney drunk and when he falls asleep they nick all his stolen valuables and leg it for the next ‘wormhole’.
Next they arrive in Sherwood Forest where they meet a surreal looking Robin Hood played by John Cleese (I loved his stupid hat!) who promptly relieves them of their loot and distributes it to the poor (each of whom gets a punch in the face whilst receiving it!) The dwarves manage to escape from Hood’s gang but in the confusion, Kevin runs through a second gateway, which suddenly appears and loses the gang.
Ancient Greece – just outside of Mycenae, King Agamemnon (Sean Connery)is losing a fight with a Minotaur. The monster parries the King’s spear and snaps off the point before clubbing Agamemnon to the ground. About to finish him off, Kevin suddenly emerges from mid air and lands on the fallen King, taken unawares the Minotaur steps back in surprise giving the King long enough to grab the broken spearpoint and throw it, spearing the monster and killing it. Grateful for the diversion Agamemnon takes Kevin back to Mycenae (the scene of the King’s arrival where the watch tower guard is polishing the huge horn is pure Monty Python!) there he is treated as a hero, eventually becoming the adopted son of Agamemnon much to his Queen’s disgust (in the original legend she murders her husband after his return from the Trojan Wars). To celebrate the adoption the King orders a huge feast with Kevin the guest of honour. Part way through the celebrations a dance troupe of three pantomime animals separates into six, revealing themselves to be the gang of dwarves come to ‘rescue’ Kevin (along with as much gold and treasure as they can grab, including Agamemnon’s golden crown!) Despite his protestations, Kevin is dragged away with them through the next wormhole leaving the King at first delighted with the trick and then perplexed when he realises Kevin is gone!
In the next scene the dwarves are all relaxing and enjoying themselves in Tuxedos on the deck of an ocean liner, all except Kevin who didn’t want to leave his adopted father. Drinking champagne the dwarves order “More ice Waiter!” The waiter hurries off for the ice, passing a lifebelt marked RMS Titanic!
After the inevitable the gang are thrown into the water as the ship goes down – “It’s not my fault” the leader shouts, “It didn’t say Get off before the iceberg on the tickets did it!” At this point, another major character takes over one of the dwarves (the thickest one!) and speaks through him telling the others the only way out is to wish themselves to a parallel reality populated by creatures from myth and legend. This other character is “Evil” – basically the Devil who has been imprisoned in the Fortress of Ultimate Darkness since the start of creation. This Devil is desperately trying to learn all about modern technology so he can control it and escape to rule all creation. Evil is not a nice person to be around, in one scene he describes himself as ‘All Powerful’ which leads one of his minions to ask “If you are all powerful, why are we trapped in this Fortress?” Evil blows him to pieces with a wave of his hand and then casually replies “That’s a good question!” (He then explains that being imprisoned is all part of HIS grand plan to conquer all creation!)
Kevin and the gang are whisked off to the land of myth and legend in a huge water spout where they are netted (literally) by an Ogre with a dodgy back and his wife on board of their ancient wooden ship. Eventually, after disposing of Mr and Mrs Ogre overboard, a huge Japanese giant surfaces beneath the ship and wears it like a hat until he comes ashore. Just before he removes his ship-hat the dwarves build a huge syringe and inject a sleeping drug into his scalp causing him to fall asleep. Freed at last the gang makes its way to the Fortress where they are captured by Evil who is searching for their map. They manage to keep it hidden however and escape from their hanging wooden cages. Kevin and one of the dwarves (who gets turned into a two legged pig by Evil) keep the baddies busy whilst the others use the wormholes to gather heroes from throughout history to come back and fight evil including Greek archers, knights in armour, cowboys on horseback. A dwarf in a laser equipped flying thingy and a Sherman tank!Blink It is during the hunt for Kevin and Pig-dwarf that we meet these horrors – the Fortress Guards (or Wraiths according to some accounts) These things really gave me the willies! One armed ‘dead things’ with a horrible scream like a horse and pig squeal combined! The basis for this figure was the walking BAR gunner which frankly wasn’t much use for anything else!LOL The cloak and skull are all Milliput as was the ‘sickle’ claw.
If you want to know how the great battle turns out you’ll have to see the movie – but it is hilarious!

For the next answer, we’re off to the blue Police Box!Cool

As Tony correctly answered, Number 3 is the good old Ice Warrior from Dr. Who. The Ice Warriors first appeared in the story cleverly entitled “The Ice Warrior” way back in 1967. At the time (for some ludicrous reason)Blink it was intended to ‘retire’ the Daleks as the Doctor’s main enemy and to design a new alien to re-appear multiple times alongside (not literally) the Cybermen as the Time Lord’s most persistent foes. The Ice Warrior was designed by Brian Hayes and the first one ever seen (Varga) was played by the very accomplished (and very large) actor Bernard Bresslaw. The first costume was made out of fibre-glass and must have weighed a ton to wear – which is probably why the classic Ice Warriors didn’t move very fast!
Ice Warriors are the original inhabitants of Mars, they evolved as a reptilian species when Mars was a lot warmer and were eventually forced to abandon their home planet when it became uninhabitable. Ice Warriors are led by Ice Lords, basically similar but with larger helmets (almost like the Imperial Officers on the Death Star) and less defined armour. Classic Ice Warriors and Lords share a very basic ‘claw’ often dubbed “Lego hands” after the lego figures, as seen on this model – it is possible however that these ‘claws’ are merely some kind of glove and sonic weapon combination, as the ‘re-make’ Ice Warrior in the 2013 episode “Cold War” is shown to have a three fingered hand just like the Sontarans. Cold War also made it known that the Ice Warrior armour (actually a mobile heated vivarium – they are reptiles after all!) can be controlled remotely and used as a war robot in it’s own right – although for an Ice Warrior to be caught ‘out of uniform’ is a great disgrace. The hissing speech of the Ice Warriors, accentuating their reptilian character is said to have been developed by Bernard Bresslaw himself, and then continued down the series. The Ice Warriors have one almost unique trait in the ‘Who Universe’ – they progressed from out and out villains to actually becoming the Doctor’s allies in later stories. In the first story, the Ice Warrior Varga was mistaken for a Viking warrior frozen in a glacier. In actual fact Varga was a survivor from an attempted Martian invasion of Earth during the last Ice Age – I’m not sure what stopped the invasion, maybe it was colder than they expected!BigGrin Anyway, Varga, far from being dead was in a reptilian hibernation (as they do!) and when he was thawed out, well you can imagine the rest (he’s way behind schedule for goodness sake!) By the time these Martians turned to the good side their costumes had been re-formed in latex rubber much to the relief of the actors I expect!Blink
The model is based around (literally in this case) the Tamiya General Patton figure with the armour crafted from Milliput and the claws from thick plasticard strip, heated and bent around something. (It was a long time ago!)BigGrin
For the next answer we’re going “Where no man has gone before”.
