Very nice update.

I will have to try and get the hang of this photobook thing as my own build updates are text followed by pictures which is probable nit the best method of retaining readers interest.

Hope the rest of your build goes well.

Thanks Tony, very kind of you to look in and leave comment on my build. I'm not sure that readers lose interest using the text followed by pictures method but I know how you feel as it can be frustrating for the author when compiling an update?

Some people are happy do it that way, and I tried it myself for a brief period a while back for the very reasons that Tom has stated?:

(Quote) "The big problem with 3rd party photo share is that they are well known for dumping images, where all your then left with is "photo has been removed" and all your hard work to post gone down the pan, in effect you lose control of your images." (Unquote)

Tom is right, your pictures are safer and more controlled using the ModelSpace imaging system? I lost all of my pictures a while back whilst using Photobucket and didn't have any back up for them which caused a great problem for me, but I like the Photobucket system, it just suits me and I find it easier to edit and arrange my posts so I'll stick with it - though I now backup everything just in case!!

Hi Kev,

Just catching up with your build, missed the last update but had a good look this time, well my eyes were glazing over looking at the cockpit section, you have a very steady hand and it shows by what you have produced, and looking at how you have painted the port starboard panels plus the radio equipment this will be a stunner.

Well done Kev.

Regards Trev

Hello Trev, thanks for looking in and I appreciate your comments as always. Yes, it was great fun painting the cockpit, I really enjoyed it and it turned out well. Lots more detail painting to come on this build and great to know that you're watching my friend - thanks!! Cool ThumpUp

Hello all,

Not much of an update, but thought I'd post up a photo just to let you know that I'm still on this build!! At the end of the last update, I had fitted the 'Quickboost' Turbo Supercharger and it's cover to the port engine nacelle and as the starboard is a repeat of the same process I said that I would fit it later? Today I found a bit of time and spent it fitting the resin parts and PE to the starboard side - a couple of photos below. I also spent a few minutes opening the landing light recess which is moulded within the kit parts for the port wing, as an option for various different marks of the P-38. Some had a landing light, some didn't, but the P-38L did so it needed opening. I will do some more work on this area later in the build and add a replica lamp within the recess which the kit doesn't seem to provide, being just a basic recess with a simple clear cover!? I've also separated the 'Quickboost' resin engine from it's casting block so that I can start adjusting the inside profile of the kit nacelle moulding to facilitate fitting of the engine at a later date. I have also started doing some of the rivet scribing on the port wing which I won't show here at the moment as I'd like to complete it first.

Thanks for looking, all comments and criticisms welcomed.

Nice to see another update on this Kev.

Lovely clean work as usual, I had a quick read back to found myself admiring those resin parts. The detail on them certainly is a vast improvement.

Thanks for looking in and your comments Dave, very kind and yes, the resin upgrades just take a model to another level (or two) every time. They also save a lot of scratchbuilding!!

Hello all,

A bit more progress!!

I got bored with scribing rivets on the wings, so I thought I'd do some more actual building and come back to the rivets for short periods in between other things?

I started work on the port engine nacelle and boom, first job being to thin down the edges of the 'spark plug cooling ducts' which were way too thick. You can see the difference in the photo below where I have thinned the outer duct with the one on the inner side being the original thickness prior to also being thinned down. Next job was to remove the moulded mesh guards that can be seen in each of the three intake ducts at the lower front of the nacelle, below the propeller? After carefully sanding away the plastic from behind and then careful cleaning up, I added some brass mesh from my spares box. The three stages can be seen below, a big improvement.

Next I moved onto to prepping the 'Quickboost' resin engine, an Allison V-1710, ready for fitting to the outer half of the port nacelle. Some of the panels will be removed and the engine will be showing with a mechanic working on it in the final diorama. The two castings comprise of the main engine unit and another block with a round piece of ducting and a bar which forms part of the engine support frame. Everything was glued together and I added some spark plug leads from spare wire and the whole lot was primed with Tamiya 'Fine' Grey Primer. The whole engine casting will be painted a little later after which it will be permanently fitted to the nacelle. In order to fit it I've had to thin down the inside surface of the nacelle until it fits and then remove two panels in order that the engine can be seen in the finished model.

The photos below show the nacelle as it is in the kit, the two panels to be removed have then been indicated in black, and then the nacelle is shown after surgery. It's a little rough edged and I'll need to tidy it up a little and also add a small piece of plastic card to the lower vent when I fit the engine. The engine was then trial fitted to the inside of the nacelle to check for fit which was very good. everything in the photo below is just temporarily dry fitted with tape and blu-tac to see how it all looks, and I'm quite pleased with it. I will need to scratchbuild some framework across the opening where the panels have been removed and make some new panels with detail to the inside faces as these will be displayed lying on the ground next to the engine in the diorama?

Next update should see most of that done and then the engine will be painted and fitted, then it's on to fitting mesh guards to the various other intakes along both sides of the boom and then to repeat everything on the starboard boom (minus the engine as there will only be one on view in this diorama).

Thanks for looking, all comments and criticisms are welcomed.

Brilliant work as always Kev! I always seem to get the most pleasure out of a basic plastic kit by cutting out a few panels and sticking the 'innards' in behind. Somehow it stops being a model and starts becoming a miniature - if you know what I mean!
As Nem said, this will be a fantastic diorama!

Thanks for looking in and leaving such nice comments guys, very much appreciated!!

@ Daran - I hope so my friend and if it looks anything like the diorama that I see in my head .... it should do!! Thanks mate!!

@ Robin - Thanks mate and yes, I know exactly what you mean about turning a model into a miniature of the real thing and how very satisfying it is when you pull it off successfully!

@ Dave - Cheers for that mate, the extra framework shouldn't be too difficult as I've already worked it out in my head, but yes it will certainly add another level to what already looks good with just the engine on view - thanks!!

@ Alan - Many thanks mate, really pleased to know that you are watching, I appreciate your nice comments and it's nice when all the effort of building beyond a kit's standard content starts to pay off, as you say? Makes it worth all the effort!!

Hello all,

In my last update, I finished with the engine installation looking like it does in the first photo below, which is how the instructions suggest to fit the engine to the nacelle. However, I've discovered that the panel lines on the kit parts are incorrect, with one being in the wrong place and another being non-existent, so the shape of the opening in the side of the nacelle is totally wrong when looking at that first photo! In reality, the most forward (and larger) of the two panels that I've removed, should extend further forward towards the propeller and with a dog-leg around part of the main intake shroud. It should look like the image of a real P-38 in the second photo below. Which meant more surgery!! The extra section to be removed can be seen in the third photo below as indicated by the pencil line. The fourth photo shows the section after surgery and the fifth photo shows the new nacelle configuration with the engine fitted once again for a further check of the fit within the nacelle. I will have to do a little bit of in-filling in the visible gaps towards the front of the engine, though there are parts to add such as extra pipes that may cover those areas anyway. I have tidied up some of the edges of the opening by adding thin slivers of plasticard and sanding to shape. I have also added a small fillet to the lower left of the newly cut panel as I had removed a little too much material and I've also rebuilt the top edge of the cooling duct at the lower right corner of the opening, all of which can be seen in the sixth photo below.

Next job was to replicate the framework that supports the panels on the airframe when they are screwed in place. It should look something like the image in the seventh photo. I made the framework from some thin and fairly soft aluminium sheet. It was quite a fiddly job and great care was needed to keep it all neat and looking correct, but I got there with patience - this is only 1:48 scale but it looks so much bigger in the photos and any errors look much bigger, so neatness is key. I also had to manufacture a small plate in the top left of the opening which carries a small duct and a piece of pipework behind it, both of which also had to be scratchbuilt. The final two photos below show the completed framework and then with the engine fitted to see how it all looks together - quite good I think.

I had intended to have the engine painted and finished ready for this update, but wanted to get the framework right first, so it'll be painted and glued permanently in place by the time I post my next update!!

Thanks for looking, all comments and criticisms welcomed.
