Thanks for looking in and your comment Trev, much appreciated my friend. The update won't be long in coming, I've been doing some more to it today and nearing the end of the extra detailing on the engine now?
Should be painting the supercharger unit with all of it's parts and assembling the two halves over the weekend and it's looking good!!

Hi Kev, Thanks for the update on your Merlin engine it's coming together now at a pace ,it looks a very good cast to me,l have spent evening working on my AIrfix Merlin P12 engine hope to finish it soon and fit to the airframe. I'm looking forward to seeing your Spitfire with the Merlin fitted, it looks great and I'm impressed with the way that you've gone about the build - your past history of building R/C aircraft is coming through loud and clear on that one and it's a pleasure to watch my friend?!

Hello all,
Time for a much overdue update on my Merlin engine build!!
I have done as much extra scratchbuilt detail to the Supercharger/Carburettor unit as I can whilst the unit is still separate from the main engine block. The remaining pipes and connections will need to be done when the two halves are mated together, so, a few photos of my recent progress are now available for your inspection!
The unit has first been primed using Tamiya ‘Fine’ Grey Surface Primer, and then airbrushed in my own custom mix of black using Tamiya Acrylics.
The unit was then brought to life by painting in all of the details using mostly Citadel metallic paints along with the odd Tamiya Acrylic and Humbrol Enamel colours. The photos below show it as it is now, before any washes and dry brushing takes place, as I want to have the two halves of the engine fully fixed together and the final scratchbuilt details added before I do that, which when done will then tie it all together in a nice uniform way? The unit is now (at last!) ready to mate to the engine block, but I won’t be doing that in this update as I need to adjust a couple of details first which I haven’t had time to do yet. However, I have loosely pushed the two halves together as much as I can (you can still see a gap between the two in the photos?) just to see how this all looks now that both halves have been painted? I am quite pleased with it and all of that extra detail that I have spent many hours making certainly was worth it, if only to make what was a fairly basic engine look a little more realistic and busy?!
And that is the engine build up to date. I hope to have the two halves permanently joined and the remaining pipes and connections between the two made and added over the next week though Christmas may just get in the way a little so it could actually be a few days longer?!
I have also primed and airbrushed the firewall, engine bearers and a couple of pipes ready for the next step after the engine itself is completed. They were painted using Humbrol Enamel #78 ‘Interior Green’ which is popularly believed to be the closest available colour to the actual shade of green used on the real aircraft, and which I agree with, so I will be using that paint throughout the rest of the airframe wherever it is needed? I have only done the primary painting of the above assemblies in the last photo below, the detail painting and other steps are still to come.
So, nearly there on the engine assembly. After the next update I should be moving more onto the engine bay and ancillary fittings, looking forward to adding the exhaust stubs though unfortunately that can't happen until just about the last section of the engine bay construction. Then on to the cockpit assembly … which I am really looking forward to and just can’t wait for - getting a bit bored with looking at and researching a Merlin engine!!

Hello all,
I need some help!!  
Does anybody have any really clear photos or technical drawings of the firewall (bulkhead immediately aft of the engine) on a Spitfire Mk. IX, preferably any photos in colour but black and white would still be of great help? Or do you have a book in your collection that contains what I need, which I could then go out and purchase?
I want to add all of the pipes and cabling to the various fittings on the firewall of my model, but having endlessly searched the internet and many Spitfire reference books for quite a while now, I've yet to find one in which I can clearly see where each pipe or cable is routed, where it starts and where it finishes!? I've found a few photos but there's always the rear of the Merlin or something else in the way and it's getting quite frustrating as I really want to do some more to this build soon, but I'm a bit stuck on this issue!! Maybe someone on here has some private photos or good links that they could show me?
Any help would be greatly appreciated - many thanks in advance.

Unfortunately for me, I am already aware of those, which I had found in my own searches and have saved in my list of favourite sites? They are very useful though still not as clear and definitive as I'd like but if nothing else turns up they are a good starting point to work from?!

The modellers bible ref book for Merlin powered Spitfires is the SAM Publications Modellers Datafile Part 1, The Merlin powered Supermarine Spitfire - ISBN: 0-9533465-2-8
175 pages crammed full of tech drawings and colour photos of all Marks of the Merlin Spitfire (inc the Mk.IX) and has a 1/48 pull out plan set. Its long since out of print but you might just be lucky on eBay.
This photo any good, its the back of the instrument panel aft of the fuel cells on a Mk.IXTomick attached the following image(s):

Thanks for the help and info Tom and Andy, very much appreciated and will be useful in my build. I have now found some very good and clear reference for the plumbing/wiring runs on the engine firewall from another modellers' build diary on the 'net which means I can finally proceed with more work on the engine bay. Will update just as soon as I can find some modelling time to do the work!!
