Many thanks for the kind comments.

Its a kit of "worries" with certain areas causing me some stress before i even get to them. Planking the decks i am going to enjoy. Planking the hull - not so sure Confused

But will take the build at an even pace in the hope of getting something half decent turned out BigGrin

Really nice work Tony Cool

I could have done with your advice about using tweezers to remove the wood from the chopper when I chopped the planks for my Trinny deck, I caught my hand twice on the blade, you'd think I would have learned after the first time Cursing

Many thanks. It certainly helps to have some various bits of kit but as i always say not essential in many cases. What i am trying to say is it makes some of the tasks easier but people should never put put iff taking up this hobby in the thought they have to buy so many items. BigGrin

As interest developes then chances are you start to assemble a larger range of bits and pieces.

Well despite quite a lot of time spent this week on the model the progress does not look that much further forward.

Much of the week has been given over to deciding on how to manage the planking element of the build and just how much detail I want/am prepared to add to this. More on that later.

1. The main part of this week’s build has been the completion of the bulkhead planking of which there are 4 areas that needed completing.

Once the planking was complete and the glue had been given enough time to dry out I filed down the excess level with the height of the decks.

I then lightly sanded each bulkhead face to level out the planking applied and while not shown in this set of pictures, I applied 1 coat of matt varnish to each bulkhead face.

The first 3 pictures in the set below show the completion of the bulkhead planking.

2. Having given some thought to the deck planking I have decided to replace the kit supplied 5mm wide plank strips with some 4mm. The wood strips I ordered are 600mm long so having tried out a couple of deck patterns I have opted to use planks of 65mm for the decks.

For cutting these to length I have switched to my older cutter “The NWSL Chopper III”. This is a nice unit as it is built to ensure you get a good 90 degree cut which means the planks fit end to end with no gaps.

Because the baseboard of this unit is wood it’s really important (I think) to stop the blade gouging a deep cut into this so I use a small piece of plastic card under the wood I am cutting just to protect the baseboard.

Again we are using single edge razor blades and they really can catch your fingers so a scrap of wood or a pair of tweezers for removing each cut plank from the cutter is essential.

I have cut 90 planks so far (6 bundles of 15 in the pictures). Having reached this stage, it’s onto the “caulking”.

3. Lots of options for caulking the planks. Some prefer to use a marker or pencil to run a line down each plank side. I have seen black cotton being used but for me (while time consuming) I prefer to use black tissue paper.

It’s important to get hold of some “Non Colour Bleed” paper because when it comes to varnishing the deck the last thing you want is the dye coming out of the paper and mixing with the varnish.

What I do is bundle (in this case packs of 15 strips) between 3 clamps) these particular ones are clothes peg types supplied under the Mantua brand). You need to get one long edge all nice and even along with one end face.

I then brush on some PVA glue and stick on the tissue paper which has been roughly trimmed to size.

Once thoroughly dry I use a single edge razor to trim the excess tissue paper away from the bundle.

What you can then see is how I separate the bundle into individual planks again using the razor blade. Each plank will then have one long and one short side edged with the glued on tissue paper.

1. Very much open to debate on the merits of why? will it show? is it worth it? I have decided to try and Treenail the planking once in place just to add that little additional detail.

While not progressed since early last year my HMS Revenge build used Black fishing line to represent the treenails and while it looked ok this time around I wanted to try and produce a similar effect with wood.

Many people making their own treenails reduce cocktails sticks or bamboo skewers to the required size by using gradually smaller and smaller holes in a jewellers draw plate. You can see my attempts at using this method if you look at the top of the three cocktail sticks in the attached picture. You can see how the diameter has reduced compared to the other 2 cocktail sticks out of the same pack but to be honest “I don’t have enough time on this planet" LOL to produce my treenails in this fashion.

I have tried an alternative which gives me a fairly even treenail at either end of a cocktail stick so this is the method I intend to use.

When I get into the batch production making these I will show exactly how I am doing this in my next post.

2. I want to ensure that all of the treenail holes in my plank ends are uniform so for this some sort of jig is required I feel. Using some 10 x 5mm scraps of wood I have cut sufficient pieces to produce myself a small jig.

This will allow each 4mm plank to slide into the jig to the same distance and then using a piece of 4mm x 4mm wood with 2 pins in the end this will be pushed down the square hole in the jig to produce the 2 treenail holes.

Well that’s it for this posting. The next steps for me are to make the “stamp” for the jig and then to start gluing my planking onto the false decks that are already in place.

So until next time – HAPPY MODELLING EVERYONE BigGrin

SUNDAY 06th March 2016

Well progress has been a bit slow this week due to work (always gets in the way Bored ).

I have finished my treenailing jig which you can see in the first 3 pictures below. The part (third picture) that impresses the treenail holes in the plank end is 4mm x 4mm with 2 pins drilled into it.

Finally,Mellow I have been able to start my planking with the first stage being the fixing of a temporary straight edge to the deck to ensure the first run of planks remain straight and true.

For the shift pattern I have opted to use a spacing of 16mm between the end of one plank and the start of the next plank on a new row.

The kit supplied planking is described as Mukaly wood – not a name I am familiar with. These planks are 5mm wide but I decided to use a 4mm wide plank and managed to pick up the same wood in the size I wanted from Cornwall Model Boats.

The wood has a very nice yellow/tan shade so depending on what it looks like when rubbed down I may leave it as is with just a varnish coat over the top rather than resorting to a stained finish.

So far I have completed one half of the main deck so hoping as the week progresses I can carry on and finish the other half of this deck as well as the other 4 Blink.

When planked I will move onto the simulated treenailing so hoping I will have reached that stage by next weekend.

WEDNESDAY 23rd March 2016

Well the last 2 weeks I have been suffering with one of the worse colds I have ever had. Still cannot shift the cough but as I am on a week’s holiday have been trying to get on with some more of the build.
In my last update I had started to plank 1 of the 5 deck areas of the ship, and as I love to “tempt Fate” thought that little task would be complete in a week.

Anyhow on with the completion of the mid deck section has been my task over the last day or so. I have slight mixed feelings with the end result as it was not until I finished this part I realised that some of the wood strips I purchased for this task have very slight differences in both thickness and width – only marginal differences but enough to be slightly annoying in that I did not manage to achieve the finish I was looking for.

The only saving grace is the fact that the couple of areas I am not too happy with will have additional detail parts added over the top so not going to give myself to much grief over this part of the build but will pay more attention to the remaining deck planking.

While it’s debatable as to what value it adds to the build I thought on this occasion I would attempt a slightly more realistic “tree nailing” effect using cocktail sticks rather than the black fishing line I have used in other builds. To make my “treenails” I purchased a cheap set (under £2.00) of drill bit collets from eBay. When these are chucked in the drill and tightened down you get a small hole into which the cocktail stick can be pressed in order to make the treenail. In this instance I went for the 0.8mm size chuck with the holes in the deck being drilled out at 0.75mm this allows a nice tight fit of the “treenail” without the use of glue.

Once all of these were in place it was a case of a quick rub down with fine sandpaper and coat of matt varnish just to seal everything.
Well that’s one deck finished – just 4 more to go.
