Looking really good, velocity stacks certainly give the engine presence!!

I seem to have missed your updates on this for quite a while Malc (don't know how!?) so apologies for not commenting on your last few updates, but I have to say lovely work so far, on what is a fairly basic kit and one which was never intended to be anything other than a motorised gimmick originally as you've discovered for yourself already, so you've done an excellent job converting it?
I think you're doing a sterling job my friend, well done!!
Years ago when I used to made quite a few of the Tamiya 1:12 F1 kits, I used to make my own trumpet meshes Malc as they are easy enough to do? All you need is some wire mesh of the correct scale, which is widely available as an aftermarket item from any good model shop or online, and then make a basic 'forming' tool comprising both a male and a female part to do the forming of the dome? The male part is just a piece of dowel or sprue of the correct diameter to match the size of the trumpet, with the end sanded/polished to a nice dome shape. The female part is just a hole of a very slightly bigger size than the male part which is drilled into a piece of plywood or similar hard base? Then lay the mesh over the hole, push the male part into the mesh and part way through the hole to form the mesh dome. Once formed just carefully cut the mesh dome from the sheet with some fine pointed (and sharp) modelling scissors, then attach to the trumpet with a good canopy glue such as 'Formula 560' which dries clear and job done!?
Hope that helps Malc?

Beautiful job Malc. This kit may be lacking in detail but all the extra work you are putting in is really making a massive difference

"Yes another Mclaren" No, a well upgraded Mclaren. From a basic kit you`ve already made it something special and it`s not finished yet. Keep up the good work Malc. Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Thanks guys, for all the encouraging comments.
Kev, many thanks for the info on making the mesh domes. I'll be scouring the local hobby shops for a suitable wire mesh.

Tried my hand at a 1/20 scale seat belt set. Tricky little PE parts but happy with the result. RM1 attached the following image(s):

Further to Kev's suggestion about making the stone guards on top of the inlet pipes I found a local company that supplies wire mesh and got a couple of offcuts to play with. I drilled a 6mm hole in an aluminium plate and used a 5mm ball ( could only find a rusty one ) to press the mesh into a dome. The hard part was cutting the final size with snips. I need to get a 5.5mm hole punch to get consistency with the finished size. Anyway one is done Malc.RM1 attached the following image(s):

Now that is very neat and well thought out. Makes a massive difference to have the dust guards in place. Happy Modelling

Very nice work Malc, she's looking good and I'm glad that the making of the mesh covers worked out well for you?! They certainly make all the difference to the appearance of the induction trumpets!!
Top job my friend - well done!!

Thanks for all the encouraging comments guys. I'm still looking for a suitable hole punch to make the rest of the covers.

Finished !! Not a bad little model but would benefit from some underbody detail. A nice addition of an early Mclaren for my collection. Malc.RM1 attached the following image(s):

I learned a few more things about Mclaren cars and modelling with this build so very worthwhile. More in the finished gallery. Malc.
