Pack 31 contains Stages 119-122

Stage 119 - Contains the rear wheel support, rear wheel hub, rear wheel, transparent acetate sheets for the canopy.

Cut three 5mm strips and glue them onto the lower part of the tail as shown in step 1. Cut to shape with a knife, then smooth with a sanding block until they are flush with the fuselage.

Retrieve fuselage plates 1, 2 and 4 (from Stage 86), 7 and 5 (from Stages 89 and 100), 22 and 23 (from Stage 102), and 25 and 26 (from Stage 104).

Add the panel details with the rivet marker as shown on the relevant templates.
Form fuselage plate 22 around the tail. Use a piece of wood to bend the metal to the angles of the body.
Abrade the underside of plate 22, then glue in place and secure with pin-nails in the corners. Do the same with plate 23.

Place fuselage plate 7 against the fuselage, use a marker pen, draw a line where the plate overlaps the edge, then trim the plate so it fits neatly and make any necessary adjustments. Then abrade the underside, glue and pin-nail plate 7 in place.

Ensure that plates 4 and 5 fit correctly, then abrade the underside, glue and pin-nail them in place.

Fit plates 25 and 26 beneath the right stabiliser. Use a piece of wood to bend them into shape, then abrade the underside, glue and pin-nail them in place.

Arrange plates 4, 5 and 7 on the side of the fuselage, as shown in step 9. Make any adjustments, then abrade the underside, glue and pi-nail them in place.

Retieve plates 1 and 2. Bend them over a rod so that they take the shape of the tail. Abrade the underside, glue and pin-nail the plates in place.

This completes this Stage, carefully store the remaining parts in a labelled bag.

Stage 120 - Contains the canopy rear frame, canopy racks and brass wire.

Retrieve a 3x3mm wooden strip. Cut it into lengths to fit in the lower part of the nose, as shown. Glue them in place and when dry, use a sanding block to sand them flush with the curve of the fuselage.

Retrieve fuselage plate from Stage 86 and lay it on the underside of the nose. Bend it and adjust it, then abrade the back and glue it in place.

Retrieve the fuselage plates for the underside of the nose from Stages 115 and 116. Bend both plates so that they follow the shape of the body. When you are sure that they fit correctly, abrade the back then glue them in place.

Retrieve the four tail plates provided with Stages 108, 110, 112 and 114 – they fit on the upper and lower sides of the tail stabilizers. Test-fit them in place first, then when you are sure that they fit correctly, abrade the back then glue them in place.

Retrieve the four smaller tail plates supplied with Stages 108, 110, 112 and 114. Adjust as necessary, then abrade the underside of each piece and glue them to the top and bottom of the tail stabilizers, nearest to the tailfin, as pictured.

Take the two pieces of the base fixing structure provided with Stage 82 and place a spider nut in each. Glue them in place and use a flat wooden strip as a guide to ensure that the two pieces are flush with the outer edge.

On the inside of the wing, glue 4x4mm wooden strips as shown in the photo to reinforce the base fixing structure and hold it in place securely. Turn the wing over and with a round file, file down the excess thread of the two spider nuts.

Retrieve wing plate 28 from Stage 72, add the detailing with the rivet marker according to the template. Place the plate on the underside of the wing, then mark and drill out the holes shown. Abrade the back, then glue and pin-nail plate 28 in place.

Retrieve the lower wing plates 27 from Stage 81. Adjust them to fit in the area of the wing behind the leading edge, then abrade the underside, glue and pin-nail them in place.

Retrieve the sheet of wing cover panels from Stages 103 and 104. Identify each of the pieces for each wing half. Cut each from the fret in turn, smooth any rough edges with a fine file, abrade the underside then glue each in the position's shown on each wing half keeping them symmetrical.

Carefully store the ‘J’ detail piece safely for placement at Stage 122.

This completes this Stage, carefully store the remaining parts in a labelled bag.

Stage 121 - Contains canopy framework and transparent acetate sheet.

Note: At this point in the build, if you are installing the operable undercarriage, you will need to have to hand the optional Servo kit. Available here: http://www.model-space.c...servo-kit-spitfire.html
The official build will show the installation of this option, the instructions also provide instruction for a fixed undercarriage without Servo.

Steps 1- 6 of the instructions are to be completed only if you want to fit the optional servo kit to raise and lower the landing gear.

Retrieve servo mount from Stage 69, screw the servo onto the servo mount in the orientation shown.

Use 13mm screws (provided with stage 94) to secure the servo mount onto the servo base already mounted within the wing. Pass the servo plug/cable through the indicated hole in the wing, out through the underside of the wing.

Drill two holes in the plastic disc (supplied with the servo), at the circled points, (the holes should be a snug fit to suit the threaded part of the metal connectors fitted to the disc at Step 5). Ensure sure the holes are perfectly aligned with each other.

Cut two sections of the rod from Stage 67, and bend the ends over with pliers to the shape as shown. These will be used as the servo transmission rods.

Screw the connectors into the two holes in the disc, and pass the straight ends of the transmission rods through the holes in the connectors. Hook the bent end of the rods through the holes in the suspension joints of the top of the undercarriage legs. If you wish, you can fit a collet or short length of tube onto the end of the transmission rods when passed through the suspension mounts to prevent them from coming lose.

Place the centre of the servo disc onto the projecting part of the servo and secure with the large screw supplied with the servo kit. You may need to adjust the centralisation of the disc upon the servo once powered up.
Plug the servo cable into the control unit and also the battery switch harness, then fit four AA (R6) batteries into the battery box.
Ensure that the wing is topside down so that the undercarriage is free to move. Turn on the switch then rotate the knob on the control unit to raise and lower the undercarriage. If need be, adjust the centralisation of the servo disc so that both u/c legs are lifted equally.
Once the test has been performed, disconnect the servo plug from the control unit and set the unit aside.

To make the inner wing flaps, retrieve plates 29 and 30 from Stages 83, 88, 90 and 93. Make a hole for a pin-nail in the tabs at each end, then bend them at 90 degrees. Cut, shape and glue 3x3mm wooden strips at intervals along the length of the plates, ensuring that the position of each of the wooden strips aligns to the inside of each of the ribs of the wing (do not align then so the strips land on top of the ribs as the aileron will not fully close). Ensure that the corners line up with the ribs of the wing. Insert a pin-nail into the hole in the tab, which will act as a hinge for the ailerons.

Cut, shape and glue additional 3x3mm woden strips to hold the plates to the ribs of the wing.

Retrieve the top wing plates 2 from Stages 58 and 75. Test-fit, abrade, glue and pin-nail them in place. If you are fitting the servo kit, you will need to cut/adjust the shape of theses plates as shown in the inset photo of Step 11.

Retrieve the remaining wing details from the previous stage, abrade the underside then glue them in place.

Retrieve the upper wing plates 4 from Stage 84, abrade glue and pin-nail them on each half of the wing.

Insert and secure the aileron flaps into the wing.

This completes this Stage, carefully store the remaining parts in a labelled bag.

Stage 122 - Contains an underwing wing radiator cowl and the canopy mirror.

Take the base plate from Stage 65 and glue/insert two spider nuts (captive nuts). Glue the base plate into place using 3x5mm wooden strips as reinforcement. When dry, sand the strips to shape so they are flush with the fuselage.

Retrieve a skin plate from Stage 103 and place it on the underside of the fuselage. Draw the shape of the fuselage underside and carefully cut it out. Make a hole for the LED in the position shown and mark along the centre line with the rivet marker. Abrade the underside of the plate then glue and pin-nail in place.

Retrieve fuselage plates 21 (from Stages 89 and 100). Abrade the underside, glue and pin-nail them in place.

Retrieve the round ‘J’ detail piece stored from Stage 120, abrade the underside and glue in place around the hole for the LED.

Retrieve a second skin plate (provided in Stage 103), cut it to make two pieces to cover the underside of the tail section of the fuselage. Bend them slightly, then sand and glue in place. Rub the edges lightly with a fine abrasvie pad to blend the join line.

Retrieve plate 8, from Stages 115 and 116. Bend them to fit to the shape of the lower fuselage. Then abrade the underside and glue them in place.

Check the position of the wing fit into the fuselage. Make any necessary adjustments to the fit, so that the holes for the spider nuts align with those in the body.

Retrieve the cockpit door from Stage 92. Cut and glue a 30mm length of 1mm brass rod to the inside of the door. For a painted finish: apply primer and paint the inside of the door cockpit green, and paint the brass rod red.

Hold the door in position on the fuselage and mark the position where the hinges will be. Then make holes above and below those marks. Glue one hinge in place, and insert the projection on the door into the hole in that hinge. Hold the door in place and glue the second hinge into position, over the second projection and into the two holes. Then, make a hole and glue a small length of brass wire into it.

Retrieve the canopy track pieces from Stage 120. Cut out parts A, B and C and file any burrs. To make the tracks for the canopy, glue the ‘A‘ pieces together. Do the same for parts ‘B’ and ‘C’. The ‘B’ pieces will fix to the cockpit door.
Use a fine file to smooth the inside and outside edges of the ‘A’ track. Abrade the underside then glue it on the right side of the fuselage, 5mm below the cockpit rearward edge.

Use a fine file to smooth the inside and outside edges of the ‘B’ and ‘C’ tracks. Abrade the underside and glue them on the left side of the fuselage, again 5mm below the cockpit rearward edge, making sure both are correctly aligned.

This completes this Stage, carefully store the remaining parts in a labelled bag.

The final Pack 32 contains Stages 123 - 125

Stage 123 - Contains plywood internal walls for the radiators, antenna stub attachment and wing fairings.

Spitfire Paint information: http://forum.model-space...spx?g=posts&t=17251

Find the metal sheet from Stage 118 and remove parts A, B and C with cutters. Use a file to remove the burrs.

Take a transparent sheet from Stage 119 and place it on the ‘A’ section of the canopy. Use a pen to draw the outline as shown then cut the sheet and keep it to one side.

Bend the front part of the canopy – part A – around a cylindrical object. Join and glue the pieces together to form the shape shown.

Put the canopy front onto the fuselage to check that it has the right curvature, but do not glue it in place yet. Adjust until it fits perfectly.

Retrieve the metal sheet provided with Stage 121 and snip out parts D, E and F with cutters. These pieces will be added the canopy part A. Use a fine file to remove the burrs.

Bend parts B, C, D and E to shape and glue to part A as shown. Glue on the mirror from Stage 122.

Find the back pieces of the canopy from Stage 120. Draw and cut the transparent sheet to fit these parts of the canopy.
Bend the two pieces to fit the fuselage, when properly in shape they will measure 55mm across - Do not glue the pieces on.

Cut two pieces of 1mm brass wire 35mm long. With tweezers, glue one piece on the inside of part F, 2mm in from the edge. Turn the part over and repeat on the other side. This will form the sliding section of the canopy.

If you are painting your Spitfire, apply a coat of metal primer to the canopy pieces, and then paint the outside surafes the same green as the exterior green camouflage green, and paint the inside surface cockpit green. Paint the mirror silver.

Ensure the transparent sheet fits inside the front of the canopy, then glue it in place using a canopy glue such as 'Formula 560'(do not use superglue). Do the same for the rear canopy and the sliding section.

Insert the ailerons and tail rudder at the rear of the fuselage. Glue the antenna stub attachment to the top of the rudder.

Cut out and shape details M and L provided with Stage 104. Glue them in place as shown in the photo. Then glue the antenna from Stage 37 into the centre of the M detail.

Take fuselage detail K from Stage 104 and glue in place as shown.

Take the cockpit closing mechanisms from Stage 118 and glue in place as shown.

Glue the air intake cover (Stage 117) in place as shown and part 3 from this stage.

This completes this Stage, carefully store any remaining parts.

Stage 124 - Contains plywood walls for the wing radiators, carburettor air intake, lower wing detail parts.

If you are painting your Spitfire, retrieve the the paint mask templates from Stages 113, 114 and 117.

Retrieve the two wing fairings from Stage 123 and fix one on each wing as shown by the arrow. Then glue on a lower wing detail (3) and repeat symmetrically on the other wing.

Retrieve the sheet of wing details from Stages 103 and 104. Separate parts N and O from the metal sheet and sand them. Glue them to the fuselage, as shown in the instructions.

Fit the wing in position, then secure them with two screws from Stage 94.

Take the carburettor air intake, (part #2 from this stage), file any burr's and glue into place at the base of the nose.

If you opt to leave your model natural/unpainted, use a lint free cloth to polish and clean with panels with isopropyl alcohol to remove any surface grease, be careful not to make any scratches. Then apply a clear satin or matt varnish, (dont forget to mask any area's such as the tyres).

If you are painting your model, apply a metal primer, then paint the underside of the fuselage light grey.
When the paint is completely dry, find self adhesive mask A, cut out the circle and stick it onto the underside of the wing, then mask off the rest of the wing, marking the centre so the painted roundels will be concentric.

Carefully remove mask A and keep it for the other wing. Then cut out and tape down mask B and paint white.

Carefully remove mask B and keep it for the other wing, then cut out mask C and place in the centre of the painted roundel.

Paint the inner roundel of the mask bright red. When the paint is dry, remove the mask and paint the roundel on the other wing.

The centre of the red roundel is 180mm from the wingtip. Use stencil D with a light green paint to create the letter ‘T’ as shown on the underside of the nose.

Mask the lower part of the fuselage and paint the top dark grey. When the paint is dry, paint the dark green camouflage.

Use masks E and F to make the dark blue and red roundels on the top's of the wings. The centre of the red roundel is 180mm from the wingtip.

Mask off and paint the yellow and red details on the leading edge of the wing halves, 185mm long.

Position masks G, H, I and J, and paint a roundel on both the sides of the fuselage.

Position masks K, L and M, then paint the letter markings sky green.

Use masking tape, to create a 22mm wide fuselage band, positioned towards the tail, then paint the band sky green.

Mask and paint the tail fin stripes, 55mm wide in red, white and blue as shown.

This completes this Stage, carefully store any remaining parts.

Final Stage 125 - Contains a wing radiator casting.

Radiator option: The Spitfire Mk.Vb only had one radiator beneath the right-hand (starboard) wing. For improved accuracy, you can choose not to add the left (portside) radiator.

Glue the engine wiring panel (Stage 113) in place at the rear of the nose. Paint the engine support light grey. If you are fitting the optional motor, screw it onto the motor support (assembled in stage 87) and then place the assembly into the nose section, as shown in Step 1.

Paint the propeller Spinner sky green and the propeller blades black with and yellow tips. Fit the Spinner onto the propeller assembly and secure at the rear of the backplate using the three screws supplied in Stage 67,

Insert the spindle of the propeller into the motor couple (supplied with stage 76), then tighten the allen screws into the coupler.

Feed the cables from the motor through to the battery compartment, between the cockpit and nose. Glue the engine block (Stage 113) in place, and the exhaust manifolds (Stage 97) to the side of the engine block. When dry, place the engine cover into position.

Cut away the bottom section of the control panel from Stage 113. Test-fit in the front of the cockpit then glue it in place.

Next, glue the cockpit floor, and then the right side panel in place. Then glue in the left side panel, then the pilot’s seat.

Paint and glue the radio antenna and headrest provided with Stages 41 and 42.

Paint and glue in the joystick from Stage 35 and sight from Stage 44.

Glue the front and rear of the cockpit canopy in place. Then insert the sliding portion of the canopy into the tracks on the fuselage.

Take the machine guns assembled in Stage 77 and glue them into the compartment in the wing. Then retrieve the large and small cannons from Stages 54, 57 and 59 and glue these into the leading edges of the wings on both sides.

Paint the components of the tail wheel from Stage 119 in light grey. Assemble them with a 12mm screw and a nut from Stage 65. Make a hole 35mm from the end of the lower rear part of the fuselage and glue the wheel in place.

Paint (one or both) the radiators from Stages 122 and 125 light grey.

Take the plywood walls of the radiators from Stages 123 and 124. Then cut pieces of 1.5mm brass wire and glue them on, as shown. Then paint the walls black and glue them in place within the intakes as shown in Step 9.

Glue either one radiator under the right wing or a radiator beneath both wings, in the position/s shown.

Paint the antennae from Stages 34 and 73 light grey. Then, make holes in the undersides of the wings and glue the antennae in place.

Locate the plywood base for the circuit board and battery holder assembled in Stage 67. The circuit board will operate the LED lights (if you choose to install them) and will be glued to the base. Do not glue the battery box.

Unscrew the wing to connect the cables to the circuit in the underside of your Spitfire.
The distribution of connections is as follows: 1 - switch, 2 - battery holder, 3 - green LED, 4 - red LED's x4 and 5 - motor.

Arrange the wires in the underside of the model and use the hatch supplied with Stage 66 to keep them enclosed. The switch is be positioned inside the cockpit.

Then fit the wing back in place.

Use 0.5mm brass wire supplied with Stage 36 to make the antenna cable, then paint it black.

This completes the assembly of the 1/12 scale Spitfire.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLfxqKJUd6M

Optional display stand available here:
http://www.model-space.c...lay-stand-spitfire.html

Display stand assembly:

Cut the template along the edge of the L shape. Then place the template on the wooden base, with the L shape in one corner.
Use an awl to transfer the four holes on the template onto the base. Then drill a 2mm hole in each of the marks on the base.

Before installing them, you can opt to paint the upright support brackets (A & B).

Tighten a screw B through each of the A brackets into the four holes in the base. Leave them all slightly loose. Place one bracket B up against two of the A brackets so they are in the correct position. Then
tighten the two screws in the smaller brackets to secure them.

Place a screw A into the aligned holes of the brackets from the outside. Tighten a nut onto the end of the screw. Repeat Step 6 to secure both brackets B to the brackets A.

Repeat Step 6 to secure both brackets B to the brackets A.

Take the anchor base plate and paint with silver paint (or a colour to match the A & B brackets if painted). Place it between the tops of the brackets and tighten a screw B into each of the four holes.

Take the nameplate and paint the recessed areas with black paint. You can glue the nameplate in which ever position on the base that you choose.

Remove the anchor baseplate from the brackets. Then secure it to the underside of the Spitfire with two (3x16mm screws from stag 66) in the position shown.

Carefully position the anchor baseplate, with the Spitfire added, to the top of the brackets and refit the screws.

Undercarriage Servo pack:

Available here: http://www.model-space.c...servo-kit-spitfire.html

The Servo control is positioned on the display base behind the upright brackets.

Fit the Servo lead coming from the servo on the underside of the Spitfire, into the servo control box.
Use double sided tape to secure the switch in a suitable position.
Plug the battery box lead into the servo control box, then fit four AA (R6) batteries into the battery box.

Turn on the Switch, then turn the control box knob to raise and lower the undercarriage. Ensure that nothing restricts its movement as permanent damage may be caused to the undercarriage or servo.

This complete's the 1/12 scale Spitfire display.
