It certainly would be cool to see a Mk.1 Sunderland restored and on public display?!
I originate from Southampton where there is a small aviation museum near the docks, which used to be called the 'R J Mitchell Museum', but is now called 'The Solent Sky Museum' (prefer the original name!) and in that museum they have a Short Sandringham, which is the 'civilianised' version of a Short Sunderland and was used in the classic days of air travel by flying boats? I re-visited the museum last year after a long absence and the public are allowed to enter the passenger lounge and galley of the Short Sandringham to see what life was like on a flight in one of them? I was the only visitor in the museum at the time and was talking at length to one of the guides about how fantastic it must have been to pilot such a craft and to my surprise he asked if I would like to go up into the cockpit (not normally allowed!) where I was lucky enough to be allowed to sit in the pilots' seat at the controls, where we continued our chat and then to climb an access ladder to a small hatch in the cockpit roof above the engineers' station where I could then look along the top of both wings at all four of the engines? The Sunderland/Sandringham is a large plane when you see it from outside but looks truly massive when you get the view that I did that day! I am amazed that they even managed to get off the water in them and this plane was small compared to some of the flying boats, like the Boeing 'Clipper' or Howard Hughes' 'Spruce Goose'?!!
They also have the Supermarine S.6b Racing Seaplane that won the Schneider Trophy outright for Britain in 1931 plus a good number of other historic aircraft including the only example of a Saunders Roe SR/A.1 jet powered seaplane fighter!!:

There is also quite a lot of display cabinets containing models of many, many aircraft types from all eras. Well worth a visit if you're in the area any time?!
