I googled and came up with this:-
The windlass is a means of converting rotary motion to linear motion, usually with some mechanical advantage.
Essentially a class 1 lever, the effort is applied to the handle of the crank, the fulcrum is the centre of the drum, and the load is applied to the rope. The mechanical advantage is approximately the length of the crank divided by the diameter of the drum.
Since starting this build I learn something new almost daily.
Happy building

To me a windlass is a nautical term for a simple rope and block lifting devise (Simple crane)

to me, the word windlass is mean't to mean windless,it's use is to move the ship when there is no wind, drop the anchor out at sea,and wind like crazy to move the ship.

A windlass is a smaller version of a capstan, primarily used in smaller vessels.

quote period pieces #36 "a horizontal winch for anchor work similar in use to a capstan"

capstan~ a vertically mounted rotating device for raising the anchor
