Build of the year 2016 entryI have not been able to build much of late due to the split that me and my fiance are going through. The situation is that she is still living here while she purchases a house and I buy her out of this one, this means that she is stockpiling furniture and what not ready for the move, this taking up all the space in the house and garage (where I currently build). The good news is that everything is complete on my end as of last week and her purchase should be complete very shortly. In the meantime I have been taking the time to drastically increase in my stash  Enough of the ramblings, here is the background for my entry; I grew up in Germany as dad was in the Army with 21st Signal Regiment, I loved growing up there, Germany is a great country, incidently mum is actually German and I was born in Hanmer, albeit 9n a military base. Around 1989 dad was based at RAF Wiltdenrath, home to 19 & 92 Sqns who flew Phantoms. Both 19 and 92 Sqn provided one bird each to the quick reaction area ready to scramble at a moments notice in an Air Defence role, which is somthing we often got to see. I quickly grew to love these large brutish looking aircraft and will be doing my build as one of these squadrons wearing the Air Defence grey paint scheme of the time we were there. I have been gathering together everything I need for this build and am nearly there. Just awaiting on the arrival of the resin exhaust nozzels, seamless intakes and the declas that took me an age to track down. I have just found the Mr Hobby do the correct BS colours I require so an order will shortly be going in for them.

Great to have another aircraft build in the comp and the Phantom is a seriously good aircraft, for which you have some seriously nice upgrades there - well done!!
I wish you all the best in the comp Dave - good luck - and I'll definitely be watching this one all the way!!

Oops, thanks Kev I forgot to post my link  I just hope I do it justice as this will be my first Aircraft build, I have been watching lots of YouTube videos and reading lots of other build diaries for Phantoms over and over and feel confident I can do a decent enough job  I've actually wanted one of these for about a year now but the eBay prices were putting me off, in the end I found her on a Facebook model selling site for £30 posted Actually just remembered I haven't got any ladders for it yet, damn more searching  Having never worked with resin before what is the best method if any to clean it prior to use?

Thanks all for stopping by I'm certainly looking forward to this one, I had a few other other kits that I wanted choose from that would have given a massive wow factor but a I didn't want to get too bogged down in something that I wouldn't finish in time

Dave You have yourself a great model there. Would love to get hold of a decent Phantom kit but they certainly are not cheap. Hope you great some great fun from building this one. Happy Modelling

Hello Dave,
The resin just needs a quick wash in some clean water with a bit of washing-up liquid in it to remove any oils/release agents from the moulding process, or you can use a 50/50 mix of Isopropyl Alcohol and water if you have any of that to hand, then let it air dry. When you come to start working with the resin parts, you will need to remove any casting blocks that are present and most manufacturers include a rudimentary diagram or instruction sheet showing where to make your cut, though most of the time it is fairly obvious? The blocks can either be removed using a razor saw or a mini cutting disc in something like a Dremel or similar? If you use the disc/drill method keep the speed down to a sensible level and keep a constant eye on where the cut is going as it’s easy to wander a bit and use a face mask to stop the dust being breathed in!
When you’ve removed any casting blocks then just use some wet and dry to tidy up the area where the block has been removed? Best to keep the part wet to keep down any dust, either by using wet’n’dry with water or by using one of those atomiser type trigger bottles that those ‘antibacterial’ surface cleaners come in from the supermarket? Also keep the cutting mat well wetted down just to stop any dust being lifted into the air? Resin dust is carcinogenic so ALWAYS wear a face mask if making dust as you do not want to breathe it in, it’s nasty stuff!!
Some people also wear rubber/surgical gloves as the dust can be an irritant if you have sensitive skin and always wash your hands and clean the work area thoroughly once you are finished sanding. If using gloves get some of the non-oiled (dry) ones otherwise you’ll need to degrease the parts all over again!

I thought it was about time I got this started. I have now moved the model from out of the garage into the spare room although the spray booth is still in the garage until I get the time to sort the model room properly. I've started with the cockpit tub, although it doesn't look like a lot of progress, a lot of time has been spent removing molded on details ready for the Eduard photo etch, this will be added once I paint the tub. davetwin attached the following image(s):
