Hi Alan, thought you might like this - first hand account of the Plymouth Fire bombing from my old boss' autobiography (which I helped him write! ) Robin "We did have hundreds of incendiaries landing all around us which we had to run about putting out, they would fall out of the skies sounding just like hail stones as they bounced off the roofs and walls dropping to the ground, some would go off at once, some would not. We had buckets of sand all put ready to extinguish them as quickly as possible because as well as causing fires they also lit the place up so Jerry could see us so that was urgent. Later on in the blitz the Germans developed a nasty incendiary which was designed with an explosive charge meant to explode after it had burned for three minutes to try and get the fire watchers and air raid wardens who were putting them out. So the authorities told us to be careful and not to approach the bomb if it had been burning for more than three minutes. How on earth were we supposed to know how long it had been burning?, rushing around putting them out, dodging the shrapnel, we couldn’t know how long they had been going so we just put them out anyway and hoped for the best. We managed to get away with it so that was good. I had an incendiary bomb up until the 1970’s, it was one that hadn’t exploded and I kept it as a souvenir but during one of Dad’s clear outs at Goodamoor he found it and decided to hand it in to the police, much to my regret. My mate Freddy found one during the war and, being Freddy, decided to try and get the end cap off to get the gunpowder out. He was sat on the doorstep of his house with the incendiary on his lap trying to lever the cap off when the thing detonated blowing him backwards, burning his legs and making a right old mess of his steps. He got into a fair bit of trouble from his Dad and others for that little escapade! Freddy was a mad chap but he’s still alive and he’s still mad!"
