Interested to know what type of wood others are using for the deck planking, including the middle gun deck through the entry ports.
I originally used beech, but have this weekend gone against it and am looking to replace- thinking of using tanganyka, but I find it has a very orange colour to it. Does anyone have any photos of any light wood they have used for planking to recommend?

if you look at my working rudder, my last post has pictures of the lower gun deck partly planked in unchanged, none stained tankanyaka or however you spell it.
might help you get an idea on how it looks

Thanks for the replies.
Benny - just had a look through your build diary and your tanganyka planking is pretty much what I'm aiming for. Did it have the orange colour to it before you oiled it? (secretreeves pictures show it exactly how mine looks).
Also, did you run the black marker along the edges before you glued them down?
Thanks, Tom

Thanks, Tom hi the colour of the tanganyka planks were a very light colour but the danish oil gave them the browny colour they are now...and i ran a marker down the edges and the ends very quickly so the ink didnt soak into the planks to much..hope that helps...paul cheers benny

Artful - Are you positive that you used mahogany on your deck??
I know that sounds like a daft question, however I'm still trying to decide which to use - especially without being able to physically look at the wood before I pick it. I'm a joiner and I spend hours in the saw mill picking wood that I like the grain pattern of or distinctive markings in it for a particular job when it requires a nice finish!
However, mahogany is a distinctively dark wood with a red tint that yours just doesnt look like. However in your build you say it is. To me it does lend itself more to walnut or perhaps teak? However your build pics of the planking is spot on the colour I want!

Blue Joe A thousand apologies. I'm talking rubbish. I've now pulled the invoice out of the gash bin; it was WALNUT not mahogony. I'm sorry to mislead you it was unintentional. Still it shows you to be a true craftsman. ArtfulBodger Previous Build: HMS. Bounty

Fella - No apologies, was more concerned that perhaps you had bought mahogany and been supplied something else or more worryingly I was losing my ability to identify wood!!!. I certainly was not implying anything about you and as I said definatly no need to apologise.
