Well after my crash and burn on the MFH 1/24 Daytona Cobra I decided to try my hand at their 1/12 GTO kit.

This is a mostly white metal kit with some clear resin parts so you can see the pistons moving.

Here is a video showing the tappets moving

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8awmlGsSjLM

It has hundreds of tiny white metal parts, some wire and some decals. The instructions are pictorial and pretty good. You have to drill about a million tiny holes to facilitate assembly so I set up my drill press with a micro compound table so I can accurately place the parts for drilling. I will be keeping a count of how many holes I drill in this kit, but I know right now it will be a LOT of holes. The holes are 05.,0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mm in diameter.

Here are some pictures of the parts and instructions.

We start with the pistons. They need clean up after removing from the sprue and then you have to drill 0.8mm holes into either side of the piston heads to pass a gudgeon pin to attach the connecting rods

So far 24 holes drilled.

yes this is the visible version. One side of the engine is made from clear resin so you can see the pistons moving in the engine block.

I will be eagerly following along. Are you cleaning the white metal by hand/Dremel or using a magnetic polisher?

More drilling. Here is a picture of my drill press set up.I have the micro compound table set up so I can accurately position the piece I am drilling.I have now drilled the holes in the pistons for the gudgeons and drilled the holes in the connecting rods so I can assemble the piston assembly.

It is a bit time consuming using the drill press, but it is the only way to get the holes exactly where they need to be.If i want the pistons to move in the cylinders I need to be precise.

total 36 holes drilled (all 0.8 mm).

So here are the 12 pistons and connecting rods. You connect them with 0.8 mm brass wire and then assemble them on to the crankshaft

Now the pistons are connected to the connecting rods with the gudgeon pins and I started assembling the crankshaft.

The crankshaft is assembled in sections with 2 pistons per section. The ends of the crankshaft sections are keyed. I tried test fitting the pistons into the cylinder and it will be a very fiddly job to get them all in place and secured without getting any glue on the parts that need to move.
