A quick update on today's work. The camber was calculated for the rest of the installed support beam locations and packing pieces added to the beams. The after-most forecastle deck piece was then cut and sanded to shape.

Pic 1 shows the deck piece taped in place (none of the deck pieces have been glued down yet) and Pic 2 shows the deck camber.

I tried the port after-most superstructure side I have been working on to check for fit before doing ant wore work on it and was surprised that it actually seemed pretty good and Pic 3 shows this roughly in place. I still need to check with the plans that it extends far enough to the stern.

Pic 4 shows the second forecastle deck piece in place.

I think I will now have buy some tube poly cement (not used that in years) as the liquid cements evaporate too quickly to get the decks positioned.

Well that's it for now

A little late but an update of last weekends work. I first glued down the deck pieces one at a time. For each piece I fist applied a bead of thick super glue along the longitudinal beams then carefully placed the deck piece on the beams. I then placed 3 wooded batons along the the beam positions and taped them down to hold the deck to the beam, Pic 1.

After leaving for approx 30 mins to fully set I then removed the tape and centre baton, moved the other 2 batons so they were close to the edge and re-taped them down to hold the deck tight down on the hull edge strips, Pic 2. I then ran Deluxe materials' super phatic glue along the join and left for approx 1 hour to dry before continuing with the next deck piece.

Pic 3 shows the deck pieces glued down and the start of the after section of the superstructure with the continuation of the forecastle deck running into it - none of thee parts glued as yet.

Pic 4 shows the same as 3 but after some of the openings cut out.

The portholes on Hood were flush with the outer surface of the superstructure/hull so I decided to just drill the correct size holes and (after painting) glaze them with Deluxe materials glue n glaze, Pic 5 shows a test piece I did to show the effect.

Pic 6 shows the start of some of the superstructure that sits below the shelter deck with portholes drilled and eyebrows being fitted.

These structures also had large vent openings which appear to covered with a steel mesh. I found the steel mesh from a fine flour sieve worked quite well for this, Pic 7.

Pic 8 is just a more general view of the eyebrows and mesh in place.

I'm afraid I have been a bit lax in posting updates of late so here's the progress so far.

I have been working on the superstructure below the shelter deck. Pics 1 & 2 show the aft structure under construction although there is still a lot of finishing to be done on this and all the other structures in this update but i have trying to get the main structures built before the youngest come home from uni and I lose my work space for the summer.

Pic 3 shows the aft sides taped in place and the mid and aft structures sat in place.

Pic 4 shows the shelter deck template glued to 1mm plastic (5 sheets glued together) with photo-mount adhesive.

Pic 5 shows the shelter deck cut out and sat in place to check for approximate fit although it will need minor adjustments once the sub-structures are finally fixed in place.

Pic 6 shows the addition of the aft port and starboard structures at in place.

Pic 7 shows the forward structure under construction and Pic 8 shows it sat in place.

Pics 9 & 10 are further shots of the structures built so far temporarily sat in place.

Pic 11 shows further work being done on the aft structure sides. The cables are 0.4mm brass wire with fixings made from 0.2mm brass wire. I drilled a 0.3mm hole each side if the cable and fixed a 'U' shape piece of the 0.2mm wire into the holes. Unfortunately my 0.3mm drill bit broke after only 2 fixings were fitted so I have had to order more drill bits.

Pic 12 shows the etch brass frets I have made for the cord reels to be fitted on the walls of the sub-shelter deck structures. I am currently deigning the frets for deck mounted reels and the HOOD name for the aft sides.

Well that's the progress so far, still a lot of work to be done on the structures already made to get them to fit correctly and they will then need painted before fitting as once the shelter deck is fitted they will be inaccessible.

Another quick update, I ordered the drill bits from Expotools on Thursday pm and got Friday lunchtime - always excellent service from expo.

I have now finished drilling the holes for the cable clamps, made the clamps and fitted them.

Pic 1 shows a clamp ready for fitting and pic 2 shows the aft shelter deck sides to date. They still need a couple of additions before I can spray the upper halves and add the HOOD lettering which I will make from etch brass and paint white before fixing.

Pic 3 shows a fret I have made for the deck mounted hose/cordage reels.

That's it for now
