I AM CONFUSED..admin said this..Overall single planked, but the bottom half of the hull will also be skinned with dark veneer planking....I ASKED THIS.. although i am sure tomick is correct can admin confirm that the bottom will be skinned in veneer we already have one builder stripping his work so confirmation would be nice..AND TOMICK SAID THIS..As per Admin's previous advice, the lower part of the hull is basswood single planked, which if building the natural version will be stained, and if building the painted version there will be an option to copper paint or copper sheath...So admin is saying 2 different things all i am asking is for confermation as what we are getting.. if there has been a post about this i apologies i missed it..thanks paul

Hi Admin,

There is another confusion going on in the forum, You confirmed yesterday that the bottom is in Basswood as well as the top but will we get veneer to go over the top of those planks like you will be giving an option for copper plating. As veneering the bottom would be pointless if you were plating the bottom, but if you don't want copper plates then will you offer veneer instead.

Hope that makes sense.

Chris..

Hi Chris

I'll look into this for you and advise.

Thanks
Admin

Hi All

The hull will be single-planked and can be painted, lightly stained to the colour shown in the finished photos, or coppered, as you prefer. The wood we are supplying is lime (US term 'basswood'). Lime is a hardwood that is also flexible and easily worked, so it's ideal for the purpose. It was used for some of the finest historic carvings in Europe, including those by Grinling Gibbons, whose work included Blenheim Palace and St Paul's Cathedral. Therefore there will be no veneer.

Thanks
Admin

thanks chris..but i fail to understand why they tell us we will get veneer.i for one am going to double plank so i can get a decent finish around the gun ports and show the planking through the paint the reason i have done this is because we were told that veneer would be supplied.i wish they would make there mind upBigGrin .cheers paul

I am not sure why it was mentioned earlier about veneer. I asked whether we could be offered veneer as an option like the copper plates.

Basswood is easier for the beginners to bend and shape as it is more forgiving. I am doing the Surprise in Walnut and that's brittle, My San Francisco 2 was mahogany and they were worse. Bend too much and Snap.. Basswood when soaked in water can bend in a complete circle very easily..

I agree guys, this has been a confusing subject, and I to would have appreciated some veneer or 0.5mm timber to dress up the hull, especially the lines where the gun ports are, if you look at the Artesania Latina build, this pic hull_008.jpg on this build http://www.modelshipworl...ctory&&start=40 you can see they have used this method, and it looks good, so I dont know why DeAgostini have chosen not to use it?

Sorry David I got it completly round the neck. Thought you were saying that the woods were supplied in the his kit so how come we dont get them. Confused You meant the method doh! Blushing apologies! Yes his finished hull is beautiful! BigGrin but IMHO its the same old question do we want keep shelling out more cash to make up for the kit's perceived shortfalls.
