JNR Class C57 steam locomotive

The Class C57 is a type of 4-6-2 steam locomotive built in Japan from 1937 to 1947 and was the first modern standard passenger engine and appeared nearly everywhere on Japanese sub-main lines, and is said to be the most popular passenger engine among Japanese steam locomotives.

A total of 201 Class C57 locomotives were built. The class was retired from regular passenger service in 1975.
32 Class C57 locomotives have been preserved, of which two, C57 #1 and C57 #180, are preserved in full working order. C57 #1 is operated by JR West and is based at Shimonoseki Depot.

C57 #180 was restored to working order by JR East, and hauls special event trains on JR East lines mainly between Niigata, Aizu-Wakamatsu, and Koriyama.

C57 #135 is displayed in the centre of the Japanese National Railway Museum. It hauled the JNR’s last passenger train which ran on Hokkaido on 14th December 1975 – reportedly with more than 2,000 passengers squeezed into its eight carriages and watched by another 25,000 people at the lineside.

Stage 1

This model is pre painted so to stop the white bloom that sometimes happens with superglues I will be using 5 minute epoxy for this build. Super glue can be used and the instructions do give a solution to any white bloom by using hand lotion to remove it.

I would suggest using cotton gloves for this build to protect the paint from greasy marks but you could also wash your hands after each stage. Another point is be careful when assembling with screws as a slip of a screw driver will scratch the paint but if you take your time then you will have little if any problems.

Also the build will simply be in a sequence of stages rather than packs so at one point or another you could overtake the diary but it will catch up again.

Your parts:- Number plate, brass wire, smokebox door, smokebox and jig.

Take the brass wire and cut it into four equal lengths then using some sand paper square off the ends of the wire and insert the four wires into the four holes in each corner of the number plate securing them with the glue of your choice. When the four wires are dry insert them into the four holes in the smokebox door then carefully push the number plate onto the smokebox but before pushing fully home insert the jig between the door and the number plate. Turn the door over and dab a little glue on each of the four pins that are sticking out on the inside of the door. When the glue is dry remove the jig and snip off the excess wire with some snips.

Save any unused parts in a bag labeled with the stage number for future use.

Stage complete.

Stage 2

Your parts:- Smokebox front, boiler joint, chimney and screws.

For this stage you will need the smokebox door from the last stage, line the door up with the front plate after swinging the hinges open then line up the hinges with the door and push gently home. When the hinges are fully inserted turn the assembly over and dab some glue where the hinge pins show then allow to dry.

Next take the smokebox and the boiler joint and line it up with the end that has the rivets and the screw holes. Use four 2 x 4 mm screws to fix them both together being careful of the paint surface. Now take the smokebox door and secure the door with a small piece of masking tape. Then line it up the same way you lined up the boiler joint and fix it in place with four 2 x 4 mm screws.

Save any unused parts in a bag labeled with the stage number for future use.

Stage 3

Your parts:- Driving wheel, coupling rods A and B ,bushes and pins.

Check the coupling rods for burrs or flash and remove them with a flat file once the burrs are removed you can use sandpaper to clean it up further. If you look at the rods on the outside you will see a recess when the rod pin sits, hold the rod with the square part facing upwards over the mounting hole in the wheel, insert a bush then carefully screw the pin in place. Repeat this for the other rod on the other side.

Save any unused parts in a bag labeled with the stage number for future use.

Stage 4

Your parts:- Chimney base, spark arrester mesh, ring, lip, blast pipe, pivots and handle.

Take the chimney from stage two and apply some glue around the mid section and add the chimney base to it . When the glue has set put more glue around the lip and line it up with the smokebox making sure the chimney and smokebox are correctly aligned.

Next inspect the ring for the spark arrester you will see it has a thick and thin lip on each side, on the side with the thick lip glue the round mesh to it and below this add the blast pipe. Place the mesh cone in the thin lip side and glue in place lastly add the upper spark arrester part to the cone. When the spark arrester assembly is dry open the smokebox door and apply glue to the base of the chimney and add the spark arrester to the chimney and hold in place until the glue drys.

Line the two pivots up with the holes in the smokebox noting the thick ends go into the smokebox add one to each side then on the right side add the handle to the pivot.

Save any unused items in a bag labeled with the stage number for future use

Stage 5

Your parts:- Front deck base and upper plate, left and right deck sides, screws.

Take the smokebox assembly and test fit the deck base with the tab then add a small amount of glue to the tab and then fix the base in place with two 2 x 4 mm screws making sure that the base is as close as possible to the smokebox. It may help to store the smokebox assembly on a box to prevent damage to the deck base.

Store any unused parts in a bag labeled with the stage number for future use.
