"How about trying to build an actual good kit instead of throwing these clowncars against walls?" "Oh... that's actually a very good idea". Tamiyas McLaren SLR 722 Edition is a 2010 reissue of the original 2006 1:24 McLaren SLR kit with some very nice bling in the form of a prepainted metal under panel, metal axles, metal transfer stickers, window masks and carbon decals. While not weighing in too heavy at 128 parts (+8 poly caps and 3 screws) the parts are very finely detailed and offer a lot of opportunity to completely mess up things. Should be good.  Things start off with the suspension. The brake calipers all have very tiny Mercedes Benz decals. Note also in the middle of the chassis the door openers have been modeled and painted with a silver lacquer pen. The shock absorbers are built as a single piece each and have been painted aluminium first, then the spring part only was carefully touched up in glossy black while avoiding the shaft of the springs, which gives a nice impression of these being built up out of way more parts than they are (at least in natural light conditions. In the flash, the glossy black has a way of looking kinda weird).

Looks good so far.I had this kit and I messed up painting the body pan so I thought it would be a good idea to soak the part in lacquer thinner overnight.I woke up to a puddle of black goo.

 The front wheel housing is added and first work is done in the engine bay. The motor is only modeled in the upper half and consists of three parts of which you see the first two. The third part, the airbox, will cover all of this up, so it's the last chance to see it all. With the big metal under frame it makes a certain amount of sense to only model the parts of the engine one is likely to glimpse. The parts that are modeled look fantastic. At this stage the car reminds me very much of a Batmobile.

 As you can see, the airbox shrouds all the previous work and detail. While this part looks very close to the original, it's very difficult to paint. It would have been much easier if Tamiya had split this up a bit more.

It's amazing how much the eyes mean to the face of a car. Even with no other body parts installed, the headlights alone tell you which car this is going to be.

Run of bad luck today. Revells Decalsoft ate up the 2 speedometer decals and the mercedes star in the steering wheel, so I replaced them by freehand painting with a needle as well as I could at that size. I've got rid of the Decalsoft and will switch to vinegar or something.

 Done with the interior work. This looks strangely crooked in the photo, but it's not in real life. I think my camera is wonky.

Shame about the decal soft eating the decals, but nicely saved with the painted ones! Looking good!

Thanks everyone. It's always weird to me how we tend to fixate on these little things, when in the end no one would have noticed anything is missing when looking at the whole model. But we know. WE KNOW.  I've got to say, I really like how the wheels run with the polycaps. This is my first kit that uses polycaps on axles and it gives the wheels not only silky smooth movement but also helps with orientation. The model is nice and heavy now with the metal under body panel installed. It's got a good feel to it. Feels like a car, not like a toy.

Got a chance to work on this again. Had a bit of trouble with the body when the TA42 did not want to cooperate (too humid), but that's all sorted out now. Not without requiring a 5 hour clean of my airbrush though, after I decided to shoot decanted TA42 through it. Never do that. Seriously, just don't. The front fender has been added now. Also started on some small parts for the main body like the rear view mirror and reverse lights (which I would post a picture of, only my phone just died)

Put your airbrush through an ultrasonic cleaner if you havent got one I promise you that is the only way to clean it properly apart from that looking good Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

The 5 hour cleaning session DID work but I had to get in there deep. The TA42 turned into some kind of rubbery material, so one could pull it out of the gun in flakes eventually, which helped. When I was done the gun looked better than when it left the factory, but I'm never going to do that by hand again.

Thanks T, I love this kit, even though it holds quite a few challenges.  Case in point this is where my constant yelling for "more parts" comes back to haunt me. The rear lights are split up in over a dozen parts altogether, which makes for easy painting, but rather fiddly gluing. Especially since we have chromed, clear and normal plastic parts coming together here. In the picture the covers of the lights are not yet added, they will be done at a later stage.
