If you want to avoid the risk of planks snapping, in my view it is always advisable to soak them first. The electric plank bender softens the wood by turning moisture to steam. No moisture - no softening!

They do work on dry wood, but take longer to bend the plank. You probably can't get as tight a radius in the plank as you can when it's wet.

Hi wallace! I have the electric plank bender and I found that you only need to wet the planks for about 10 minute in hot water. Bend the planks slowly to start heat the plank alone it length then it will bend as you make your second past, take your time and keep checking the fit. When the plank is bent to shape hold the plank with elastic bands onto the ribs leave the dry for 24 hours before gluing and pinning in place. This will give the plank time to shrink back to size. I would bend 3 - 4 layers of planks at a time, it's better not to get to far ahead as you need to shape some planks to fit. Darron
