December 2016 commemorates the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
http://pearlharbor75than...ikOvGls0CFcWVGwod3cICAQ
In commemoration of this anniversary, darbyvet (aka Carl) has constructed the Trumpeter 1/200 USS Arizona BB-39 model kit.
Launched in 1915, the USS Arizona is remembered for the loss of 1,177 officers and crew during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Unlike many of the other ships sunk or damaged that day, Arizona could not be fully salvaged, though the Navy removed parts of the ship for re-use. The wreck still lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial, dedicated on 30 May 1962 to all those who died during the attack, straddles the ship's hull.

Thanks Mr T So lets get started on this amazing kit.I hope I can do it justice and provide a suitable display piece to honor the sailors that lost their lives in the tragic loss of the Arizona Here are some pictures of the kit.The hull is in 2 parts so you could do a waterline model.I am doing the full hull version. The hull is beautifully molded and the upper and lower sections fit very well.I may need a little filler here and there, but overall it is a good fit.The lower hull is a red color, but I am going to paint it.Colored plastic still looks like plastic to me. The majority of the kit is plastic, but there are some metal barrels for the larger guns and some photoetched detail parts. There are clear sprues for the searchlights and for the 2 Kingfisher floatplanes included. There is a also a color scheme, but no rigging diagram so I will need to figure that out. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

I will be using a detail set from KA models to enhance the kit.The detail set includes self adhesive wooden decks and photoetch for the catapults, cranes, railings and some other details. I am a bit nervous about the decks.I have read horror stories of adhesion problems with the wooden decks.Hopefully the KA decks will be OK.The decks do look really good though. The instructions consist of 4 color photos of the model with the detail parts marked in their location. My first job is to go through the Trumpeter instructions and identify where the photoetch parts will be added. Here are some pictures of the detail set. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Painting
I will be painting the model with a combination of Tamiya and Vallejo paints. It is too big to fit in my spraybooth so I figured the acrylic paints would be less objectionable.I do have a respirator that I wear during spraying too.
I have done a bit of research no the color scheme. The Trumpeter upper hull color seems quite dark. Most of the pictures of the USS Arizona are black and whit.I did find an article that had interviewed some WW2 sailors and they confirmed the upper colors were dark.
I will do minimal weathering. These ships were generally kept very well according to the references I read.

Construction
my usual build process for a ship is to break up the build into sub assemblies.
It will take a while for the hull to be painted, so I will start building the guns and then move on to the deck superstructures at the same time I am painting the hull.
After that I add the superstructures to the hull and then the detail parts. Then I start adding the railings starting at the top of the ship and working my way down to the hull.
Thats it for now. I will try to update this post weekly so you can see the progress.

Here is some progress on the Arizona. The humidity here has skyrocketed so I am holding off painting the hull until it drops at bit.I have built the 5 inch guns and the AA guns and one of the catapults. The AA guns are made up of 12 pieces each. I used the KA models photoetched parts for the catapult. It look better than the plastic one supplied with the kit.The photoetch bends nicely using my bending tool. So I have built all 10 AA guns and all 8 5 inch guns.I am building some of the smaller superstructure pieces and figuring out where all the photoetched parts go. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Still very humid here so I am continuing to build the superstructures and add the photoetched details.I decided to test fit the parts I have finished. The fit is very good and the photoetched parts add to the realism. I also installed the prop shafts on the hull.Hopefully this weekend I will be able to start painting the hull. So here are some pictures of the prop shafts, test fitting and some of the photoetched enhanced parts. darbyvet attached the following image(s):
