Hi willz

for the third night in a row I am trying to figure out
how the heck you did these tompions on your 12pounder.
Neither toothpicks nor green stuff has worked for me so far.
You even manged it to include an eye hooks.
Maybe THIS scale is my limit, at least for my sausage fingers.......

Would you share your secret with us ? If you have posted it here in the forum I did not find it.

Thank you very much,
Timm

The tompions,
Ok, first I got some 0 .7 brass rod of good quality and some 1.5 plasticard strip.(dia 1)
Then I drilled a small hole right through the plasticard.(dia 2)
Next I put some masking tape on a 0.7 drill bit at 1 mm from the tip and drilled the small hole up to the masking tape.(dia 3)
Next I super glued the brass rod in the 1 mm deep 0.7 hole, keeping it square and vertical, and left for 5 mins.(dia 3)
Next with a craft knife I trimmed the plasticard a bit nearer the size required. (keep the brass rod vertical and trim downwards on some scrap wood) (dia 4)
Next fixed it in a cordless drill and filed it more round and closer to the small hole in the centre of the tompion.(dia 5)
Next when satisfied I had it close to the hole and reasonably round I started up the cordless and continued to shape even smaller and making it cork shaped with the file, whilst doing this keep checking the size with the bore of the barrel.(dia 6)
When happy with the size give it a whirl in the cordless and clean up with wet and dry paper, then remove the tompion from the brass rod (care is needed here or it willl disappear into outer space) I left it in the chuck of the cordless and put my snips behind the tompion and lifted it off.
Next I have some 0.3 photo etched brass eyelet's (caldercraft) and I super glued one in the small hole we already have in the centre of the tompion.(dia 7)
Next try the tompion in the barrel and slowly with micro drill bits enlarge till the tompion fits as desired (with the small new barrels care must be taken here) and thats it, if you want to do a lot of tompions the finished size of my tompion on my small cannon is 0.8 at the largest part of the cork shape so drill a 0.8 hole in some plasticard and use it as check gauge.
Last dia 8 show the tompion I did today in about 1 hour, it even fits the small barrel better than the original (and thats just practice)

Started my scratch 1/72 Vic. First I put the false keel in a jig and plumbed it up with a laser, when happy with that I put in the front two ribs, I cut the slots in the ribs slightly wider than needed, this gives me the movement to line up the centre line with the laser. If I cut the slots tight they would of had to be absolutely bang on so a bit of play was the way to go. The top straps on the ribs are only there temporally, two reasons for this, one is to keep the centre line on the rib for the laser to follow and keep true and the other is to add strength to the ribs for fairing e.t.c. The internal cuts on the ribs are rough and ready at this stage and all will be out of sight in the finish build. All decks will be calculated from the curved false keel although no camber to the decks is planned at this stage.
It`s more taxing on the old grey matter than I originally thought, having said that its bonfire night in four weeks that gives me enough time to see how it goes.

Just a quick update on the scratch, first a picture to show how neat and tidy I work, next pic, the top straps left on the ribs temporally for the laser to follow the centre line is working a treat, last pic, a minor problem caused by the wide slots in the ribs, because the ribs aren't tight using more glue and the access is running onto the jig, will need a hammer and chisel to remove victory from jig when the time comes. lol

The deag A.L. On hold at the mo, trying to catch up with the scratch, fitted all of the ribs using the centre line and laser method, think I`ll need more support for the ribs the ply I used not as good a quality as the kit.
Attention now turning towards the bow, this definitely needs more support for the planking, been thinking about the balsa method, or more ply ribs not decided yet.
As for the planking does anyone know which is the best wood to use, I would really love to do this to a natural finish (we`ll see) so need a wood with a reasonably stable tone

Ok the gangboard, haven't got photo`s all the way, but here`s how I did it.

First made the basic frame from 1.5 mm walnut glued and cramped overnight, I used two wedge shaped blocks to clamp it with a piece of 6mm ply at the top of the blocks to stop them tilting, just the the smallest nip on the clamp to hold it together. Diag 1

Next I had some 3mm x 1mm walnut and I filed out a notch halfway down its width to obtain 1.5mm.
Diag 2, for the bit with no cut-outs I did this at both ends till it fitted snugly (you can see the idea in diag 3), did these one at a time and glued them into place by eye. This is easier than it sounds because there`s nine of them, i.e. First you put in the two end ones at just under a 1mm from the frame, next you put in the centre one by eye, then you have again two centres in between the ones you`ve put in, so again cut and fit and glue these in between the ones you`ve fitted by eye, and now you have four centres in between all the ones you`ve already fitted, so cut ant fit and glue these to make nine. (hope that makes sense)

Next the cross bits, these are all end grain and were fitted individually, first again file out a notch in a piece of 3mm x 1mm walnut just as in diag 2, as you go keep trying it in the lattice, diag 4, when it fits snugly cut the length smaller diag 5, then glue it into place so that the end protrudes slightly on the finished face, go all the way across using this method and leave to dry, diag 6 (WHEN PUTTING IN THE LAST ONE NEXT TO THE OUTER FRAME, BE CAREFUL NOT TO MAKE IT TOO TIGHT OR IT WILL POP THE FRAME JOINTS) , when dry snip off the ugly bits at the back, diag7. The snips can`t cut them as small as i`d like so I then ground them off with a dremmel and grinding wheel, (easy does it) you can see the scorch marks in diag 7,
So I just carried on doing a bit at a time till it was finished, its not the sort of job you can crash out, more of a in between, bit here bit there, the photos should explain most of it, the three square rigging holes were all done by visually from john mckay`s book.
One last point the frame is made of 1.5mm thick walnut but it actually scales in at about 3mm for a 1/72 scale conversion, this was done in an attempt to hide the rough under side, we now need to add a strip of 1.5 mm walnut down each side of the underside of the gangboard frame edge to bring it up to 3mm thick, diag 12, no need to bother with the front and rear they are never seen, and finally the finished gangboard alongside the scratch grapnel.
