The two big contenders in the model ship photo etch detail up world are now both hard at work at a detail up set for Trumpeters soon to arrive 1/200 HMS Hood.

I will personally be getting a Pontos set for my hood when it arrive as I have always found them to be more complete.

Looking at the two sets currently in production I would say that the Pontos have the edge so far but both contenders look to be taking listening to input from the HMS Association

Pictures are of the current progress of the sets as posted by the manufacturers

Pontos Set

Quote:
70% of design has been finished. We try to release by late August 2016.

Anyway this set will have contents as

1. Wooden deck.
We are drawing to realize over 99.9% plank lines of real 1941 Hood deck shape.

2. Turned brass parts:
All possible turned brass parts will be included...
Precise 15in and all barrels will be included.
15in main barrels have rifles as our other BB ships.
Bitts, some Capstans, Mast/Yard sets Flag staff and so on as Pontos standards.

3. Photo Etching parts
10 Full size frets and maybe more.
We don't mind the additional area..

4. Resin.
Some for odd shapes of kit parts, Etc.

5. Dry Transfer decal
Water draft marks

I will update with some pictures shortly

How is the photetch on the Pontos set Dave. The KA models photoetch has very nice etched in fold marks, which makes folding easy. The metal is really thin though and the railings are REALLY delicate. You get to bend them once and then thats it.If you try to bend them again they fall apart.

The Pontos sets also have very nice etched in fold marks to make it easy to fold. I would say that the metal is very similar in thickness to the MK1 etch if not marginally thicker.

If you are lucky you will get away with 2 folds with the Pontos sets but that would be it.

Here are the pictures, I couldn't add them earlier. My next neighbour is building an extension and now moved on to his front porch, in the process of doing the ground work to re-route the trains they cut through the Virgin Media cable to my house!!

Anyway here are the pictures so far for the Pontos set, they've only just announced theirs so I'm sure there will be more pictures to follow

now that is stunning. shame the etch does not rectify the kit errors on the forward spotting top and lower bridge range finders, still some scratch building needed

I'm not into 'period' ship modelling with masts, sails and rigging, but I quite like the idea of doing a more modern warship one day, perhaps an aircraft carrier or a major battleship, and seeing some of the very comprehensive etch detail sets and wooden decks that are becoming available, I can very much see myself building something like this in the next few years!?

Looks very impressive indeed, with some superb detail!!

Thanks Dave,
I was a bit confused because on Amazon the KA detail set looked exactly like the Ponto one.

Pontos have posted a few more pictures of their work in progress on the Hood detail up set.

Its great to see that Pontos are engaging the community with this and taking onboard a lot of advise provided by the HMS Association.

One issue that is likely not to be correct though is the error where Trumpeter have made the 2 funnels different sizes when in fact they should be exactly the same.

This is going to be a stunning kit when they've finished it.

Well Pontos have nailed it. That certainly is going to be the ultimate Hood build, fantastic, one for my wish list.

I still think it would be nice the see a hood in an earlier version when she was bristling with guns and had steam launches 😍😍😍

Interestingly looks like the 1/200 Trumpy kit has the same errors as their 1/350 offering that were corrected on the later 1/700 release. Some I can see are corrected by the Pontos pics above, rather hoping Pontos spotted them all.

If you are interested in building the ultimate Hood then this is the site you need to refer to. I used it for my 1/350 build but they know even more about her final configuration now.

All kit manufacturers make compromises and the 1/200 version is no different as it had the exact same constraints as the 1/350 version, mainly down to engineering, production and budgetary concern.

You also have to take into account that its unlikely there will ever be an 'accurate' Hood model if you take into account what the Hood Association say...

"The reality is that Hood in her final configuration was not extensively well noted as she was in her earlier career. We often see 'new things' that simply do not fit with what was previously assumed about the ship...and we've seen enough to know that even her official plans are incomplete or eroneous in places." - In effect the rivet counters will never be happy.

A couple of Trumpy 1/200 Hood reviews...

It is one of those ships that is difficult to get 100% accurate. I do like the fact that Pontosa are taking advice where they can from the HMS Association to help make it the ultimate set
