Hello all,

This will be my "2016 Build of the Year" entry:

I bought these kits online a few years back. The reason I bought them was that I built these when I was a teen back in the 80's. I was out of the house at the time and my parents moved. They had deemed none of my models needed to make the move with them and were unceremoniously thrown in the trash. These are simple kits with limited articulation and I loved them. Nowhere near the quality and articulation of todays modern Bandai Gundam kits.

I plan on building these 3 kits and adding some of my own touches. A bit of this and a bit of that and then constructing a diorama with the three models.

Best Regards,
Ron

I'm not into 'Gundam' type modelling personally but these three look quite interesting and will make a nice diorama together, especially if you get the base and weathering right? Cool

Well done Nytetrain, something different for the comp and I wish you luck with your entry!! Cool ThumpUp

Hope you have great fun building these.

Really feel for you when you say your parents threw away so much you treasured. I had a similar thng many years ago.

Kept lots of my prized books in an old suitcase and one day went looking for it only to find it had gone out with the rubbish/trash.

In the late 70's i think it was we had a programme called "model world" that as a youngster really nspired me. They produced a book to go with the series and that went out with the rubbish.

After many years of longing to get hold of that book again i managed to get an excellant copy recently from ebay. If you get as much pleasure from building your models as i have had from my replaced book i thnk we will see a great build here.

Wishing you all the bst with your build (and if you are interested in that old model world series there are some videos to watch here

Kind regards

Tony

I am planning on some lighting but I don't want to give too much away. I will say this though... no lasers. My interpretation of these mecha are more in the line of walking tanks. So more in the way of slug throwers then lasers. I will get more into the history and the story behind my build as it goes along.

The first one I am putting together is the Condar model as this will be my experimental build. I haven't put these kits together for 30 plus years and I knew they weren't great models in the first place.

The hands and feet assembled...lots of sanding and putty as nothing lines up at all...Cursing

Shoulder armor...

Elbow joint... mold lines where shallow and didn't line up at all no matter what I tried. So I re-cut them with a file as best I could.Cursing

Wrist joint... same as the elbow joint... still ongoing filing and fixing

Head halves... these actually weren't that bad. Parts matched up pretty nice.

Upper leg joint assemblies... again not too bad for fit.

Pilots cockpit... very plain and boring. Room for improvement here

Overall the build is going pretty well here in the early stages. Revell used some very funky colors for plastic to mold these models in. This was molded in brown and (I cant even describe it) light greenish white? Until next time...

Way to go Nytetrain!

I have one of these still in his box, rescued from the old garage workroom! (I think its the top one of the group) One day I'll be giving him a go, so I'll be watching your build with great interest!BigGrin

Best of luck in the comp!

Thanks Spencer,

Oh but these are far from Gundam builds. LOL Flapper LOL Nowhere near the sophistication, engineering or ease of a Bandai model kit. These models where based off "Mechs" from different Japanese Anime shows from the late 70's and Early 80's. The "Zoltek" model was originally known as "Dougram" from the late 70's show "Fang of the Sun Dougram". Some of the models in this line by Revell where taken from other shows such as "Crusher Joe" and my all time favorite..."Robotech: The Macross Saga". The other two I have I will have to do a little research on to find out where they came from. So long story short Revell execs went to Japan... got ideas for some robot models to get into the Mech craze of the early 80's... Initially these models did ok in the US market but then Revell was sued by Harmony Gold, producers and owners of the Robotech series in the US, and production stopped abruptly. FASA also used the images of these Mechs in their game "Battletech", they were also sued and the original Mechs used in the game disappeared. The Zoltek mentioned above was called "Shadow Hawk" in the FASA version of the paper and pencil tabletop game. So if you have the original versions of the FASA game books and tech readouts they are worth some money. Here is the Wikipedia link to those that are interested in the history of these vintage models.

Just a small update. Got some base color on some of the parts and dry fit them. I have to do it this way because as you see the parts, such as the legs, overlap quite a bit so these would be impossible to paint in one go. He is about 7 3/4" tall (19.7 cm) tall. Those gaps will disappear as he is just dry fitted so far. I wanted to pose him on one knee with his fist in the ground slumped over but the lack of articulation in this model prevents me from doing that unless I get the Dremel involved with a cutting blade. I will have to give this some more thought.

Ron

Another Update...Laugh So here is basically the first model nearing the end. I finished putting the main color on the mech. I had to do this in stages because of the way things went together. So lots of thinking and lots of masking tape went into this to get this far. I wanted to go with a monochrome color for this model as I didn't want it to look like a toy so much. I added some color here and there to break up the red and I might do more later on.

No cockpit or canopy yet... and the weapon is a work in progress still...

Went a bit far with the chipping effect on his butt...Blink will have to remedy that...

Side view... not much going on hereGlare

There is a wash here to accent the panel lines but the camera washed it out... I tried many different types of washes... Vallejo, Testors, an oil "gunk wash" (which looked horrible) but I ended up using my own made from water and a ground up pastel stick...Flapper

Bad out of focus pic...Cursing

Some chipping and weathering effect on the foot...

A closer look of the wash I used... I am not sure is this is the right color wash for this color paint but the black and brown wash I did looked too dark so I went with this blue-grey almost looks like German grey.

Will be working on the cockpit and masking up the canopy here soonConfused ... More weathering and decals to come soon too. Let me know what you guys think... and if there can be some improvements made that I haven't thought of please let me know.

Thanks for looking...

Ron

Coming on a real treat. Very different to the usual builds so very nterested in seeing these out together and also the fact that these kits are somewhat rare so a big step building something not easily replaced.

Hope the rest of the build goes well.

Thanks Tony,

It has been fun building this kit and reliving a time when I was younger. I was looking through my other two kits and they look better quality then this particular kit so hopefully things will go a little smoother. It's still a fun build so far.

Hi there Ron!

That's a great start and the whole three together should look great!Cool Cool
I've finally located my Condar and rescued him from the garage. When you said your finished model was about 7 inches or so in height I thought 'that doesn't sound right, I sure my one is bigger than that!' I was right - the box is identical to yours but the scale is 1/48 not 1/72! Despite years out in the damp garage it's still got the cellophane wrapper over the unopened box and everything inside should be still in mint condition!BigGrin
One day I'll put him together (possibly as a rusted out battlefield wreck - just for something different!Blink )

Keep up the great work!

Thanks guys,

Thanks Taz the encouragement is much appreciated.

Yes, Dave I love this color too it's Tamiya's metallic red. Wasn't sure I would like it but when I started spraying I knew it was the right choice. Too bad its going to be matted down and destroyed. Might us this color on a car someday.

Robin, glad you rescued yours from the garage. They are fun kits to build. They fetch a fair price on the open market. Especially, ones still in their cellophane. Hope you build yours though. If you do ever open the box, take pics I am curious if the bigger model was more detailed and more sophisticated in any way.

Thanks,

Ron

Ron

I'll certainly do that Ron, if you'd like, when I do open her up I'll scan the instruction sheets and send them on to you for comparison.
You're dead right about the cost of some of these 'vintage' kits on ebay etc - I also found my built Airfix Space 1999 MkIX Hawk which I might do a re-paint and some extra details on one day, it was about £3.99 when I bought it - almost £80 on some sites now!!Blink
