Captain Eric 'Winkle Brown - absolutely no question that he should hold the title of the greatest pilot that ever lived and what an extraordinary man in general?!
I honestly believe that he would have been the first man to break the sound barrier and do it for Britain if the brainless government of the time hadn't ordered that the 'all-moving' tailplane secrets behind our own dedicated aircraft - the Miles M.52 - be handed over to the U.S., which then allowed them to overcome their inherently wrong tailplane troubles and thus allow Charles 'Chuck' Yeager to go on to claim the record for the U.S. instead!?
Equally incredible is that he was one of only two pilots who successfully rolled a Lancaster, that must have been scary as hell!! So many great feats of aviation from such a humble man, he will be very sadly missed.

Wonder how many of todays test pilots would contemplate barrel-rolling a Lancaster bomber! Test pilot Alex Henshaw is the only other known pilot to have barrel-rolled a Lanc.

Some interesting viewing there Tom, it seems that in the early attempts at least, the take-offs were more successful than the landings!! The Mosquito landing ended up being a demonstration on how to turn a beautiful aircraft into a pile of firewood!!
Think I might keep him in mind as a nice idea for a tribute build, maybe next year.
R.I.P. Eric - they certainly don't make guys like him anymore!!
