This will(eventually) be my build of the year 2016 entry. I bought this kit a while ago as a Japanese import at half the price of the UK. Shinkai is a 3 man sub that was built in 1990, it's launched from the support vessel "Yokosuka" Until recently it held the world dive depth record of 6965m. I have plans for a display for this but am undecided if I should show a scene from the deck of the "Yokosuka" where I can have all panels open showing the interior, or an undersea "discovery" - I will pop some contents pics up here as soon as I dig it out of my loft, BTW the kit has 2 leds and battery box but I reckon I will be adding some more lights to it along with a fair bit of extra detail. Here's a look at the kit until I get my pics up. and here is some info on the real thingSteve

Very nice choice Steve and one that I too have looked at as a possible future purchase - I love anything to do with marine exploration and hope to build the Billings Jacques Cousteau's 'Calypso' one day?! I also have the boxed sets of his original programmes and find these Deep Sea Submersibles fascinating!?
A very interesting subject my friend and one I'm definitely going to be watching from start to finish, well done again on your choice!!
Can I ask what the two decals of the giant 'Oarfish' are for in your photos? Do they go on the submarine somewhere or does the kit include a representation of an Oarfish somewhere? I was trying to see if there was one on the clear sprue maybe but can't make anything out?
Good luck in the comp with this one Steve!!

I have made a start on the crew and crew compartment but have also been thinking of the rest of the dio. I have now decided to use a plane wreck on the ocean floor so I have a 1/48 scale C-45F in my stash...which can be made to look like a Lockheed Electra 10E! So the Shinkai could be investigating a very famous plane disappearance from 1937. That's my plan anyway :-) I will get cracking on this soon I promise. Steve

OK, here we go :-) The crew were made up and painted a little while ago, there is a fair bit of detail inside the sphere but very little will be seen, although the front can be made to be removable if you were planning to have this in a less than realistic setting as obviously in reality the sphere would only open at the hatch. There is going to be a light inside the crew compartment but the windows are so small that you still wont see anything inside. The sphere is just dry fitted together in the last pic, just need to work out if the seam lines will be visible or if I need to fill. Steve stevie_o attached the following image(s):

Shame they did not make it with a clear outer shell as its a real shame to hide that level of interior detail

Lovely work on the interior Steve and those figures are well painted, the faces really do look Japanese! Has has been said already, such a shame that it will all be hidden, but you'll know it's there and you'll have the photos to prove it.
Very well done Steve, I really like your choice of subject!!

Really nice start Steve, I have to echo what has already been said about it being all sealed up. The level of detail is quite stunning!
