Hey guys! Well I am still at it. Have rough cut out the lower gunports - not too well but done. All are not the 12mm square needed. How close do I need to be to be ok? Would not the gunport frames allow for some room? Not sure how the guns fit here and what is the essential point that needs to be done. Many thanks Page

Hi Page, the gun ports need to be as close to the stipulated size of 12mm square as you can get to ensure all the gun ports look the same. Have a look at this video link, it shows how to do the gun ports and the method used..... The gun port frames just finish off the gun ports nicely. https://www.youtube.com/...u2T7tQIBv4&index=12
Any queries then give me a shout and I'll help as much as I can... Regards Alan

Hi Page I'm doing the gunport linings on mine at the moment, some are 12mm, some are 21.5, some are 13mm, some are 12X13mm and so on, i use a set of digital calipers to measure each individual gunport lining, to the naked eye with everything else that's going to go into this boat your attention wont be drawn to that, as Gandale says get it as close as possible, but if you feel you need to make a change you can always line a gunport with veneer on one side to make it a touch smaller or sand it to make it bigger. hope i've been some small help. Hi Page.
I found this method worked well although I did make the odd cock-up when I wasn't concentrating but luckily it was covered by the wales, which shouldn't be a problem if you are painting in any case.
Push a thin bladed knife into the drilled hole and then up each of the diagonals you drew, but NOT all the way to the corners.
Cut the port roughly square but a millimetre or so smaller. After a little practice you'll be able to cut then exactly 11mm x 11mm.
Now here's the good part. There are some ladies emory boards for sale that are exactly 12mm at the thick end. Use the tapered end to open the port width out slowly and keep testing with the thick end until it just slides in. Then do the same with the height. The wood is soft so it doesn't need much working and of course, the emory board was designed for hard finger nails so it is just the job.
Good luck.

Thank everyone for their tips. I noticed no one suggested using a dermal drill and wood bits to carve out the ports. Is this too messy? or possibility of chipping or cutting out too much? Just seems simply and quicker. This would be done after drilling holes first. Also would one have to use hand drill to do holes or can I use Dermel with bit sized to not penetrate bulwark. Use hand drill for center hole. Page
