Hi All, Just received an email about this soon to be released dio of the "Somme". Airfix.com have it on pre-order for delivery later pert of this month, scale 1:72. Includes: 2 Planes 1 Tank 88 figures and Dio base Cost £29.99+p/p See link: Somme dioLiked the look of the content, so mines ordered. I agree it looks very nice but I still think Airfix missed a golden opportunity to release new items for the Centenary of the Great War. The figures are still the same old sets from over thirty years ago, by the time of the Somme the British were all equipped with Brodie style steel helmets and the Germans had abandoned the leather Pickelhaube for their own 'coal scuttle' helmets. It would have been so nice to see some new sets of figures in the later equipment. The MkI Tank is spot on for this battle, I didn't look at the aircraft types close enough, the biplane is probably fine but the Eindecker had been superceded by more advanced biplanes by the time of the Somme - not to say you wouldn't have seen the odd one still around though. Overall still a nice set to build and paint up but more of a marketing exercise I think than an accurate model for the Centenary. Robin. Think Airfix are starting to lose their way again, churning out old kits as something new is not the way to go and the likes of newcomers such as Takom doing it a 1000 times better

I think the two aircraft included in this set are both 'new toolings' but the rest seems to be old releases re-boxed as you correctly say Tom, so not such a great idea and I would question the 'value for money' at such a price?
Some great new kits coming from Airfix in the next few months though, I'll definitely be buying their 'new tooling' 1:72 Jet Provost, the Boeing B-17G 'Flying Fortress, and especially their new Handley Page Victor B.2 - what a kit that will be?!

Kev I think the Victor should prove very popular and if anything like previous releases will not be around for long. All they need in their line up then would be a new tooled Vulcan which would be great. Happy Modelling

Airfix seem to have no clear direction, what the value of churning out 40 year old tooled kits is is beyond me. The big shame about Airfix is they have some great ideas but their new tooled kits still fall short of the industry leaders, they dipped their toe in PE sets but nothing more, if it was not for their name and deals with stores such as Hobbycraft and people buying Airfix kits as presents for kids ten they would be in serous trouble. I would never buy one of their kits if i wanted real accuracy, detail and build qulity. “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”

The Hornby Group (who own Airfix and Pocher) are having a tough time. Back in Feb they reported mounting losses which wiped 62% off their share value and was the third profit warning in 5 months. Think a lot of it is down to supply problems from China.
