Off for a short break in Portsmouth next week and of course, I will be dragging my long suffering wife around the you know what. I will have the camera and be taking hundreds of pictures for myself but I was not planning to put any up on here as there are lots already.

However I would be delighted to capture any special features related to the build if anyone needs anything specific. Let me know.

HIya mate, I hope you and the wife have a great time, as for images, can I ask a favour? if Ark Royal is there, could you get a couple of snaps for us, as she is soon to be decommissioned, I would really appreciate it.

z8000783 hi matey, one favour please,on the main gundeck, could take a few pics of the deck itself,as I have seen the poop deck and it has only one treenail at the join which look like they could be (trenail)about 3 inches in diameter, not two treenails like we always do when planking the decks.hope you know what I mean?

Hi Karl,

Are you referring to the upper gun deck i.e the one above middle? Being a novice I am not sure which is the main.

So got there at last and must say I was a tad excited. It was windy and raining in the morning so we visited the various museums on the site. That’s where the picture of the foresail came from, it is an original complete with cannon holes.

Beautiful afternoon though especially for pictures.

As always you have to join the tour which was not great especially as they did not go to the poop deck or the main deck apart from where Nelson fell. You could see also that people in the group wanted to have a closer look at many aspects of the ship but the guide shoved us on too quickly. Very disappointing considering.

I have zipped up everything and you can download them here. Be warned, there are a lot and they’re big so it might take a while to download, up to 10 miutes on a slow connection.

One other thing, if you are making the trip yourself, they have now banned photography on board!!!! The reason? You guessed it, Health & Safety. Apparently people walking along with camera at their faces have accidents. As you can see I simply hung back and carried on anyway. Crazy but I was never a great one for rules.

@Karl It appeared that the planks on the upper gun deck (if that’s where you meant) had been renewed recently however there were 2 treenails in all the planks on all decks

@David Unfortunately the Ark Royal had left 2 days before I got there for a trip around the country before returning on the 18th December and then decommissioning.

John, Thanks for the detailed pictures which I downloaded. Unfortunately in RSA the average download speed is slower than yours. Took a bit longer than 1 hour but it is worth it. Thanks

Thanks John

An excellent set of photographs to add to the collection!

There is always something new to look at in each set. The Victory website lists the ship's boats and includes two '25 ft cutters'. I assume these are the boats which are slung from davits near the stern.

Interestingly, the 'information board' in the 'outside' folder describes the boat on the dockside as a 'Yawl'. Technically I am assuming this is more correct as yawls were common place on the south coast as clinker built work boats and were purchased for the Royal Navy as ships boats.

I wonder when they might update the website to conform?
