Visited Imperial War Museum at Duxford and found a Spitfire Vb sitting on the grass outside a hanger while the staff were manoeuvring other aircraft in the hanger so grabbed a few close up pics while I could. They were wanting to put it back in the hanger but took pity on the old guy with the walking stick and waited a bit.
I noticed that the panels didn't butt up but were actually overlapping each other, some fixings where wings joined the fuselage the panels were fixed with cross head screws (could be a bit of licence by Duxford, were cross heads around at the time of the Spitfire?) Noticed as well that the panels around the engine had removable fixings for maintenance purposes.

The full size photos show a lot of good detail, pity the forum cannot take them.

Thanks for looking in all of you.

A day to remember indeed but need to go again to see areas that we missed. The place is vast and has assistance vehicles to aid those of us less fit but we did miss a couple of areas so that is for another day when I can brave 1.5hrs on M25 and M11.
Good point is pay for one £14.40 concession and carer goes free (not sure which of us is which).
