Pack 12
Steps 1 – 17 Detail and fit the wings and doors

The parts supplied with this pack are shown below.

Take the wings of the aeroplane. Fill and sandpaper any defects between the upper and lower cladding pieces of the leading edges. Then mask the wings, leaving the leading edges exposed as shown in the photograph, not forgetting to mask the main wing light (arrowed).

Paint the leading edges dark grey, the same colour that was used to paint the upper surface of the nose and the upper leading edge of the tail. Leave to dry.

Take pieces S95G and S95D and fit them to complete the left and right wing tips respectively. Use PVA glue to fix these pieces.

Take pieces C73G and C73D and complete the front lights of the left and right wings respectively as shown. Use white glue to attach these pieces.

Following steps 6 – 9 in your instructions produce and fix an edging strip to the root of your left outer wing section, shown below. Then repeat these steps for the right wing section.

Take pieces C12 and C15 supplied with packs 5 and 2. Following steps 10 – 12 paint and detail the crew and passenger doors.

Mount the access door to the crew cabin (built in Pack 2).

In the same way, mount the access door to the passenger cabin (built in Pack 5).

Now fit the left wing. If you are putting lights in your model, complete the electrical connections, making sure the wires join as shown in step 15 of your instructions, red to red, black to black, and carefully follow steps 16, 53, 55 and 56. Otherwise ignore these steps.

Insert the electrical connectors into the central section of the wing and connect the wooden pegs as shown in step 16 of your instructions.

Finally, mount the left wing. Do not apply glue to the joints at this time. You can leave them as they are so that the wings will be removable. Repeat the operation to mount the right wing. Having done a test fit of the wings I chose to remove them both until later in the build to make other operations of the build easier.

Save any unused parts in a bag labeled with the stage number for future use

Steps 18 – 41 Adding the detail

Take pieces SD57 and SD58 supplied with this issue. Paint the second propeller and its cone, following the instructions in the Assembly Guide of Pack 1.

Take pieces C60, the engine exhausts. Remove any burrs, apply primer and paint the pieces brown, preferably using an airbrush. When the paint is dry, apply black paint to the insides.

Glue the two pieces completed in the previous step to the outer sides of both engine fairings, as illustrated in detail in step 20 of your instructions.

If you have fitted both nuts on each of the propeller screws, remove the second nut. Mount one of the propellers as illustrated, with the flat part of the central hub facing forward.

Fit the second nut. Tighten it slightly and check that the propeller rotates freely. Secure the second nut with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue.

Complete the propeller by fitting the cone to the centre.

Repeat the operation to complete the second propeller. Both propellers are now mounted and can rotate.

Take piece C56. Remove any burrs, apply primer and paint it chrome, as with other parts of the fuselage. Leave to dry, then paint the inside of the piece black. Then mount it as shown in the photograph below.

Take piece C63, which is the ceiling of the passenger cabin. Position the stringers as shown. Remember that you must file the notches, if necessary, to make sure that the outer edges of the stringers are flush with the piece.

Using sandpaper and following steps 28 and 29 prepare the cabin ceiling so that it fits perfectly into the empty space in the upper part of the fuselage. Adjust the piece for length. Also adjust its width, so that it fits perfectly.

The photograph below shows the ceiling piece in position – sandpaper the part until it fits the opening perfectly. Remember that aluminium cladding will be applied, which must be flush with the cladding of the surrounding pieces.

Cut a piece of aluminium cladding 218 x 43mm for the ceiling and prepare it with riveting patterns, then glue it in place. Remove excess cladding projecting beyond the edge of the ceiling with a craft knife, and sandpaper.

Following step 32 of your instructions, apply primer to the underside and along the edges of the piece prepared in the previous stage and leave to dry. Paint the edges of the piece green and the underside beige.

When the paint has dried, fit the ceiling in position. Do not glue it, the removable ceiling will enable you to see all the details of the interior of your model DC-3.

Take piece SD56. Smooth off any burrs, apply primer and leave to dry. Paint it aluminium, preferably with an airbrush. When dry, fix it to the lower part of the assembly prepared in Pack 2, as shown.

Take the photo-etched sheet of the aircraft’s antennae, provided with this pack. The pieces, except for S20, come in pairs and are stuck together for added strength.

Remove piece S20 from the sheet. Remove the projections with a file and sandpaper, then, using flat tweezers, bend the piece very carefully to give it its final shape, shown in the photograph below.

Remove the remaining antennae from the photo-etched sheet. Having separated them, smooth them and glue them together in their respective pairs to increase their thickness.

Step 38 of your instructions shows you how to mount the antennae.

Mount the antenna formed by pieces S21-S22 to the lower part of the pilot’s cabin, just behind the third row of rivets.

Following step 40 of your instructions mount antenna S23 on the underside of the centre of the wings. Please note: do not fit this antenna if the aircraft is going to be placed on the display stand available for this model.

Mount antennae S20, S24 and S25 on the upper part of the crew’s cabin (from Pack 2), as shown in the photograph.

Steps 42 – 58 Finish and fit the tail

Take the pieces shown below to complete the tail of the aircraft. Apply chrome paint to all the pieces, following the method described and previously used for the fuselage. Remember to respect the drying times of the individual painting stages, and handle all the painted pieces with great care.

Take the tail of the aircraft, which you assembled earlier. Attach piece C54 to complete the rudder, as illustrated.

In the same way, mount piece C55 to complete the upper part of the fin.

Take piece C45 of the elevator. From the 0.8mm diameter brass rod supplied with this pack, cut a piece that will fit into the groove on the elevator, as shown in the photograph.

Take the rod from the previous step and slide it through the hinge in the tail assembly.

From the underside, mount piece C45 as shown.

Fit and glue piece C44 onto piece C45.

Complete the assembly of the left side of the tail with piece C48 (see photograph).

Repeat Steps 45 to 49 symmetrically, to complete the right side of the tail.

Take the rear landing gear, completed in Pack 9. Insert and fix it in the underside of the tail as shown.

Start assembling the tail (Pack 5). With a small blade, carefully remove the paint from the contact surfaces, shown by the dashed lines in step 52 of your instructions.

Thread the wires through the tail, using a thin steel rod to pull them out at the end. This process was explained in Pack 9.

Fit and glue the tail to the rear of the fuselage (from Pack 5); use the dowel pegs to help you position the tail correctly. Clamp the join between the two elements firmly until the adhesive has dried thoroughly.

In the same way as you fitted the LED to the wings, fit a white LED into the rear of the tail (see photograph).

Glue together pieces C57G and C57D, enclosing the LED between them, as shown.

Carefully position the assembly of pieces C57G and C57D and glue them in place as illustrated, making sure that they are perfectly aligned with the rest of the fuselage. Then take the transparent plastic piece C43. Insert it and glue it as shown. At this point, start arranging the decals that will complete your DC-3.

Steps 59 – 76 Apply the Decals

The instructions contain precise details of where to place the DC-3 decals on the model.

Follow these instructions to fit the decals to both sides of your model. Shown below are seven pictures of the decals fitted to the left side of the model only. The right side is a mirror image of the left.

The next picture shows how the left side of the fuselage of your DC3 should look when all the decals have been fitted.

If you have removed the wings from your model now is the time to fit them back on – it is up to you whether you want to fix them with glue or leave them unglued so that you can remove them.

This completes the construction of the Douglas DC-3 model.

The optional acrylic display stand will be available to purchase via the online shop.
