As i read it in the magazine. the starn planks, layers 7 and 8 need to be tapered about 1 mm along the whole length. Will this not prodece a gap abetween the first plank in the layer and the rear one?

Thats not were i ment, i ment the planking on the hull. In issues 24 it says the sten planks layers 7 and 8 need to be tapered by 1mm anlong thw whole length. Will tapering the planks not cause a gapbetween the forst ones you lay on those layers?

from Tomicks diary -

Quote:
To prevent the planking rising too far around frames 12 to 14, the forward plank needs to be tapered from about frame 13 towards the bow by about 1mm, draw a guide line for the taper, then glue/pin into position.

Continue planking the next two layers and use the template to check the stern overhang cut:

Layer 8, the first plank sits from frame 16 to 23.

are you talking about the stern planking? if you are it really depends on how your previous planks are, for me I didnt, but read Tomicks and compare to the magazine and see you planking for guidance.

What the idea is to prevent the planks from rising to far at the stern, sort of flattening them out, keeping them level.

At least thats how interpreted it.

Looking at my stern you can see a tapered plank, I didnt want too many tapered planks together, so little at at time on a few and you wont notice it

That is were i ment at the stern. If id taper plank layers 7 and 8 my 1 mill each, wont that leave a gap when they are butted up to the other planks on that layer?

I think Tomick is correct, we need a picture mate.

The first layer of planking was at a curve following the lower deck, as the planks rise the curve continues, with tapering by 1mm it will straighten the line of planks at the stern end.

If your not sure always dry fit and make sure you put presure on the plank so it buts up against the plank beneath, and always taper on the bottom edge of the plank, not the top.

get your camera out mate, or mobile phone. You know you wanna!!!Flapper

don't over taper where the planks meet the previously fitted plank on the same layer, I wonder if that's what you mean?

If i taper layer 7 plank by 1mm across the length, Then layer 8 is layed on top it leaves a gap, the same happen when layer 9 is added, gaps appear. I have put arrows on to show the gap between 7 and 8 and were id have a gap with 8 and 9th layers

No, that's what I thought you meant, start from that end, don't reduce that end, mark with a pencil starting that end then mark the other end 1mm, it will be at an angle across the length, you need to keep 5mm that end and have 4mm the other end.

You can wet the plank and cut it, wetting the plank avoids the knife splitting or moving of the cut line, OR you can lightly sand the taper, BUT KEEP 5mm that is next to a previous plank, that's why you have that reduction.

Also beware the bulldog clips can make marks in the wood if its wet or even if its dry, the pressure you may put on the clips to hold the planks will mark it, if your painting then probably not too much of a problems, but if your staining you want to keep the planks dent free.

Thank you very much for that. Im glad i have not fixed those planks on yet. I think the instructions in the magazine are confusing there as it says reduce it by 1mm along the whole length.
Once again Colin Thank you

the taper is to be at the very end of the ship not where you have it the taper takes up the differance between the aft end and the middle frames turn your planks around, and try it a gain
