Well it’s been sometime since I last made any progress with this build and with all of my part built models "Looking angrily at me :-)" I thought it about time I got my act together and have a press on.

Say it so many times but work is what stops me dead in my tracks most of the time. Long hours looking at a computer screen but that is going to stop.

Anyhow its minor progress but this is what I have done today.

1. The first task for today (and looking at the kit instructions) is to complete
the black paint lining of the gun ports. For this I have used one of the
excellent Admiralty paints from my Victory paint set.

2. To try and reduce the amount of overpainting on the main deck gun ports I backed
each with a small tab of Tamiya masking tape. Bit of a waste of a decent product
but my cheap and cheerful masking tape seems to have gone missing.

3. This picture shows the fully painted gun ports with the Tamiya tape still in
place.

4. And this picture with the tape removed. Overall it all looks fairly neat but
will need some touching in after the second planking layer gets completed.

5. At the Bow end I needed to add in just one additional piece of strip wood to
even up this part of the build ready for the second planking to be applied.

6. And here we go with the start of the second planking layer. The kit supplies
sapele strips for this and they are perfectly acceptable but for me I am not
keen on the colour. A personal choice but I find it too "red" looking and prefer
to use Walnut strip. To be honest the sapele strip would be easier to use as
its less prone to splintering were as the Walnut strip is very brittle.

7. To ensure that the second planking strips hold fast against the very edge of the
stern have clamped a piece of scrap wood across the tops of the edge to ensure
they are glued down nice and tight.

It’s been a bit of a slow start today but pleased to be back into my build.

Lovely job Tony . That's the trouble with Walnut but I have found dampening the wood a little bit helps but you still have to be careful

Many thanks for looking in and your support.

Agree on damping down the walnut and its what i will be doing when re-cutting the gun port openings.

Have a couple of weeks off so hoping tompress on with a bit more tomorrow.

Been an enjoyable afternoon to ge honest actually getting on eith it rather than sitting looking at it and trying to plan it out in my head.

Some interesting times ahead - not least with the stern decoration- but more on that later once my plan cones together.
Happy Modelling

An excellent piece of work once again Tony. Like you my preference is for walnut, I think it's a beautiful wood if finished correctly but does need some very careful handling. Patience is the name of the game with it.....

Hope everyone has been having a good day. For me the heat has been rather taxing.

Not a massive update on todays build as I spent some of this morning looking for a few alternative parts that hopefully will give me a better finish to my model (if I ever finish it :-)

Todays update is all second planking again so sorry if its getting a bit boring but to be honest its going to be ongoing for quite a while yet. May digress and look at some of the fittings to break the monotomy as things progress.

What I did look at doing today, bearing in mind how hard walnut is to file down, was to try an d plank around some of the gun ports rather than right across them. Depending on how the plank site its possible with some but not with all.

Anyhow not a lot of further explanation required so here are some of the pictures from todays build.

Many thanks.

Been continuing with the 2nd planking but its a slow process (or rather i am slow at the process ).

Because of the bluff prow on this one i am having to soak each of the walnut planks to stop them splitting.

So Its "soak, pin in place, dry, remove and then glue in place"

Getting there and will post some more tomorrow to show how far i have managed to get.

Well it’s been slow progress over the last couple of weeks as I continue with the second planking layer on the hull.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I had decided to change the second planking layer from the kit supplied Sapelly and use in its place some walnut strip.

The Sapelle is a much more flexible wood and less prone to splitting and chipping but for me the colour and the texture of the strips in my kit were not too my liking.

The process has been slow because of my lack of skills in this area (a case of sitting, thinking and trying to plan ahead each piece). I have then had to soak a plank, pin it in position, let it dry (as they shrink back somewhat when dried out), removing the pins, gluing the plank and then re-fitting.

That said I have now completed around 2 thirds of the hull so feel quite pleased about that.

Here are some of the latest pictures:

Pictures 1 through 5 - just some general views of the planking in process

Picture 6. They do tell you to try and avoid putting pin holes into the second planking layer. While these "grip pins" I am using have allowed that in many cases there have been a couple of times the plank has tried to curl so I have had to resort to pinning into it to keep it flat.

One thing I have found is that if you put just a dot of water over the pin hole it will swell the wood fibres back and makes the pinhole just about invisible.

Pictures 7 through 11. To break the monotony of the planking I had a quick look to see what else I could have a "play" with without doing anything major that might cause me issues later in the build.

The only thing safe to play with at this stage is the grating strip supplied in the kit.

While there are some issues with some of the kit supplied parts in terms of quality and fit I do have to admit that the grating strips are some of the best I have ever seen. They are very smooth and evenly cut and not a single strip in my set had any damage you sometimes see with the "teeth" having broken for instance.

While I have not glued these together as yet (they will be dunked into a water/glue bath to lock the strips in place) I must say the fit is excellent and they are held together nice and tight.

From the kit supplied parts I have managed to make 4 x 5.5 cm square gratings which at a later date will be cut down to the sizes required in the model. I was left with 9 strips spare so well impressed with this part of the model.

After my 2 weeks leave its back to work tomorrow (just cannot wait :-( ) so chances are it will be next weekend before I get chance to work on some more of the second planking layer.

Great job with the planking - looking good. The gratings can be a pain, on my Endeavour I replaced the kit provided ones with ones purchased from CMB as the 'teeth' weren't even on the kit ones.
