Well, my assumption and probably most others about the size of the Gun Ports was a bit out! I was expecting the linings to be 1mm x 4mm not 1.5mm x 4mm. This gives an opening size of 9mm not 10mm. I intended using 1mm linings and adding a second lining of .5mm x 2mm which would be set back from the outside by about 1.5mm giving a rebate, but as I don't know the size of the gun port hatch (which would be flush with the outside planking when closed) I'm not sure where to go, especially since I've made a 'jig' to manufacture gun port openings of 10mm! Possibly another reason to issue some plans as the kit advances! Jeff

Couldn't agree more, having the plans at an early stage would make far more sense. I built the Bismark and the Titanic and did not recieve the plans until about two thirds of the way through the build. They would be a big help especially when we start doing decks and fittings etc.

Hi i agree with you on the size of the hatches do need to know the sizes i have already lined all my ports with 0.5mm x5mm walnut, with a second lining within the opening of the same size wood set back approx 1mm which i have yet to fit waiting untill the hull is more finished

I would of though if you cut a 12mm square, then line it with 1.5, thus giving you 9mm, then your hatch would be the 9mm? As I've cut to 10mm, and added the mantels and lintels giving the inside leg measurement of just over (by such a small margin) 9mm. The gap left, the hole itself needs to have a lid, so whatever your size is the size to make the hatches..or wait till this comes along in the series. I also doubt if family or friends will be viewing your ship with a tape measure

Its likely the port lids will be individually cut from 9mm wide strip to suit the size of port in the kit.

Just a one for Zeptrader, my maths like most on here is up to simple arithmetic, I did'nt want to spell out every detail just to make a point that plans would help when possibly modifying some items on the kit. When I first applied for this build I, as a newby, was just going to do as per instructions but was drawn in by the regular builders that we could improve the kit with a little modification here or there. Now I could just put the (magazine) issues to one side for six months, then I would know what's coming, but I enjoy getting my deliveries so that I can 'crack on'. There's been lots of discussion about the gun ports and some of the guys have already made modifications but most are probably 'preparing' there mods and materials so they are ready to go when the time comes, this is where some plans may come in handy. I know this point has been made several times before but I feel it's worth repeating with the hope of getting action! This post is because I thought there was a hint of sarcasm in your reply, it's hard to judge sometimes with 'E-mail' messages, if I am wrong you have my profound appologies for making an issue of it. This in no way will stop me reading all your posts which I have found very invaluable, please carry on. Cheers, Jeff

Jeff, erm, I'm stunned mate, in fact I'm gutted you even felt my post was taken the wrong way, if it came across that way I put my hands up, I'm sorry you feel it sounded sarcastic. I dont know what to say. Please dont judge me in any other way than a mate, sorry but I feel shocked about your reply. I thought my post was answering your question, how can I put it...sorry I upset you Jeff, really I am. Quote:I would of though if you cut a 12mm square, then line it with 1.5, thus giving you 9mm, then your hatch would be the 9mm? sorry, I was writing this as I would be talking to you, sort of answering your question with a question. Quote:I also doubt if family or friends will be viewing your ship with a tape measure this was something a fellow builder told me some years ago, what it means is what we (the modeller could spent hours getting it right, that family and friends may not even notice it, be half a mil or 1 mil) Once again Jeff, this was not meant to be sarcastic and please dont see me in any bad light, I'd hate that and would feel very uncomfortable if you felt that way. Unfortunately what we write on forums like this can sometimes come across in a very different light to the reader, no offence was meant Jeff.

My mistake Colin, I've PM'd you to explain, after I wrote the post I re-read yours and thought I'd made a 'bo,bo', you are actually one of my favourite reads on here and I should have known better! All the best and keep up the good work. Jeff

Hi Guys up to issue 27 now so haven't started planking tho as I've built Hatchette "Victory" "Titanic" and just finished (almost) "Bismarck" the planking doesn't frighten me, however... has anyone decided to do the cutaway and then plank it so the planking can be removed for a little bit of show? I am going to have a bash so let's know if anyone else is. Sundance
