Cheers Kev So I said I will be doing minimal weathering on the ship, but the anchor races will need some weathering.I decided to use the salt weathering technique. Here is the technique. Step 1 prime the part and then spray it steel colored. There is a photetch part that replaces the kits anchor races so it makes it easy to do the weathering without having to mask off the deck. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Salt weathering technique step 2 The next step is to get a sponge and cut off a small pieces of it.This will be used to apply the rust paint.I use Vallejos rust and steel weathering set.It has a couple of different colors of rust. using the sponge I applied the first rust color randomly over the part. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Salt weathering Step 3 Once the first layer of rust paint has dried I repeated the process using a different rust color.Once this layer had dried I mixed the 2 colors to make a third rust color and dabbed it over the part with the sponge. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Salt weathering Step 4. Once the paint has dried we will be applying the salt.I used rock salt.This comes with a grinder in the cap so you can make different sizes of salt granules.I made various sized pieces of salt with the grinder and then wet down the part with water and sprinkled the salt over the part.I tried to concentrate on placing the salt where I wanted the rust to show through. Once the water had dried ( a few minutes) I sprayed the hull color over the part and once this had dried I gently scraped the salt off the part to reveal the rust. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Great tutorial Carl, it came out looking really nice.
I always wondered why they would paint the tops of he turrets in bright colours, it always seemed to me like it was painting a target on them

Nice work indeed, the salt technique works really well, hairspray is good for a finer type of weathering. Really coming along now.

Very neat bit of building i must say. Adding all of those exteas can show up fit issues but yours looks a "million dollars" and shows some real building skills. Happy Modelling

Looking great,
i can see the idea behind the red turret tops though this also makes it very spotable by enemy aircraft

I havent forgotten about this build.There will be a major update very shortly.I have been painting all of the rest of the deck superstructures.The Vallejo paint does not like humidity and it has been very humid here.I had to respray some parts because the paint didnt cure properly. I am almost done painting and then it is on to assembly of the rest of the decks.

I didn't realise that survivors of the Arizona from Dec 7 1941 can have their ashes placed aboard the Arizona and be returned with their shipmates.

Yes and at the memorial site at Pearl Harbor the Navy does not tolerate any disrespectful behavior from tourists since this actually is a burial site Carl
