G’day folks. Sincere thanks and appreciation to all for your comments. Post-planking celebrations are now over and time to crack on with the build. There is renewed energy in the dockyard as construction continues and additional parts are finally being assembled. I added additional strengthening pieces to the supports for the transom. This served to increase the surface area for the glue. There is a curve in the lower support sections that didn’t seem all that bad until a test dry-fit of the transom was done. It was found that a fair degree of tension was needed in order to fit the transom and this was unacceptable. This was remedied by gradual use of a plank bender to curve the lower section of the transom to make it fit like a glove. That said, it still needed some serious clamping to hold the transom panel into place. Sorry, no pics as I overlooked that aspect at the time. Also added more internal strengthening pieces inside the transom – just to be sure. Just finishing off the final rows of sapele strips. Plastic clothes pegs come in handy for this as they were just enough to lightly clamp and hold into place. This is sooooooo much better after endless hull planking………. Very nice work there, Adam. I would guess the planking could cause many builds to stall. I'm sure it feels like a real accomplishment when you finish that stage. I am just starting this build but am hoping to break up some of the planking section with my Falcon build. Will definitely use your build as a reference. Hi there, Just a quick update on the build. I have completed laying the sapele strips above the gallery as well as the underside between the gallery and stern post. For the underside strips, I trimmed these to a width of 3mm. This was extremely useful to enable the planks to be laid to follow the curvatures of this area. Now it is time to give the old girl a complete and final rub down with 800 grit sandpaper and then apply a coat of sealer before marking out for painting. Yes, it is agreed that it will be a shame to paint over the lower hull basswood. However, I have tried my selected choice of paint on some test pieces and the planking detail can still be seen. Hi Folks, It has been just on two months since the last progress update. Activity in the shipyard continues at a steady rate. The chippies are having a well earned break and the dibbies have taken over for a while to commence with the paintwork on the exterior. Tamiya 6mm Masking Tape was used to mask the paint lines. To my surprise, the Tamiya tape works exceptionally well on wood. The larger areas that did not require painting were covered in blue painter’s tape, only because I had limited stock of the Tamiya tape on hand and could not get hold of wider width Tamiya tape. I also used the blue painter’s tape to mark out the lines for the location of the burgundy band. The instructions called for a pencil to mark the location of this band. However, I had extreme difficulty in finding the pencil marks on the sapele planking (eyes are not what they used to be). Using the tape also had the added bonus of making fine adjustments to the positioning of the band to ensure an even curve along the length of the hull. Once happy with the position, the Tamiya tape was used to mask the top and bottom of the band, and painter’s tape then removed. I thought I would include in this post the selection of paint products that were used: Antique White, Burgundy and Charcoal Black. I was unable to find a colour combination in a single brand that would complement each other and the sapele planking. Despite being different brands, there have been no problems in application (touch wood). I encountered some minor bleeding with the coloured paint that I applied to test pieces, so I erred on the side of caution with the use of a wood sealer as an undercoat on the raw timber. The sealer was also applied along the boundary of the masking tape and the surface to be painted. This was to ensure that the edge of the tape was sealed and aids in ensuring that the paint being applied does not bleed under the tape and onto the surface being masked. The hull was initially painted using Antique White by hand brush. It was looking rather streaky in places so the final coat was applied via an air brush for an overall even finish. Almost time for the painters to hand the build back to the chippies for installing the gunwales and gun port linings. Now that I have the colour scheme sorted, they are both beavering away on the launch. I will be posting an update on this shortly. Cheerio, AdamHall attached the following image(s):
