I would say the last one mate, issue 39 mentions sanding the hull as does lining the gun ports, do it all at the same time I reckon.

The linings are proud so that when sanded flush with the hull they follow the line of the hull curvature.

This makes no sense to me, we will spend hours to line the gun ports and then sand them all down flush with the hull, if they are flush with the hull surely there is no point putting them on in the first place as we will effectivly be sanding them away, can someone please explain this.

Hi Wallace, For one thing the holes we have cut for the gun-ports are over-sized, and lining them will strengthen the hull round the cut-outs, and also, as Tomick says, they need to be in line with the contours of the hull, hence the sanding down. I haven't got to this stage yet, I,m still only half-way up the hull with the first row of ports cut out so I've got all that excitement to come. Hope this helps you somewhat. happy building Daffy09

I was planning to have some of my gun ports closed, for example the lower gun deck. How will I be able to put the gun port covers on if the linings are flush? Anyway the linings are not flush so surely it won't look right or am I missing something again? John

I've been doing some sanding as I go. Lookin at some of the build photos I would say others are doing so too. Is this wrong ? Jimmy L.

John If you look closely at your photo, you'll notice that the edges of the port are lined and are flush but are over painted yellow which is how the model will look, what you are talking about is the inner lining shown in red, at this stage I'm unsure at this stage if the inner lining will be part of this build, if not its easy enough to add this yourself if you want this effect or for the ports you intend to have closed.

Hi John and Tomick! I have bad eye sight so I use a 32" TV with the computer at times to see thing's clearly. Take another look at the picture of the gun port, Yes the lining is flush with the hull, but the lining is scored accros the side linings to match the joins in the planking. This is what give it the look as if there is no lining around the gun port.

Yes I did notice, but the planking we are using is not to scale therefore the notching to align with planks would not have quite the same effect.

Its common practice to put a lining in a cut-out in timber to cover the end grain, dont be getting confused with the rabbet in the ports, these should be recessed to the depth of the port lids

I have chosen to plank the top then give it all a rough sand before cutting the second and third rows of gun ports. this will allow me to fill where necessary before the final sand. “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Does anybody have a picture at hand of a closed gunport? I am wondering if the lids are flush with the hull. And what the size of the gunports is concerned, it would be good to know the exact size of the gunportlids we will receive. I am also planning to kepp some gunports closed.
