That's such a shame that it broke up I wonder if he had insurance? Can you actually get insurance for these kind of things

Looks to me like a catastrophic engine failure or the tailplane/fin came detached and broke its back.

Fortunately it didnt land on anyone.Those poor guys faces just tell the story.All of us that fly RC aircraft know that sinking feeling when you know its going to crash, but with that time and financial investment it must hurt a hundred times more.
I thought there was a size limit on RC models? Maybe not in Germany since it seems a lot of these really huge RC models are built there.

In the UK, if you have a large model as defined by the Large Model Association then you need a CAA exemption certificate. This could be classed as a 'licence' of sorts.
You only need a CAA exemption certificate for jet powered planes, gliders or helis if they are over the LMA weight limit (20kg). You dont specifically need a licence for jet engine models.

It's similar control in Germany though such as Pulse Jets are allowed, USA has its own guidelines and again exemption must be sought before flying, which you should be aware of if your a US r/c aircraft flyer.

Indeed the AMA has very strict rules for large scale planes and you need special licenses and the model needs to be inspected and you need extra insurance.The weight limit on turbine models in USA is 100 pounds unless you can get an exception.
