Hi All

has any body looked at the facebook pictures and noticed there is a lot of detail missing from the ship to what is shown on the front of the magazines?

Is the facebook model the one that we are building? if so I would rather cancel my subscription and buy the calder craft kit as the facebook one looks cheap and like something you would buy in a seaside shop.

Facebook link

I know there are a lot of people kit bashing and making there model a lot better but i don't have the experience as this is my first wood kit.

I dont mean to moan because the forum is excellent & so is the mag but if the base kit makes the model on facebook then it's just not worth the money. even the sail's don't seem the same quality.

just look at the gun ports of the facebook model, and compare the gun ports on our model, we are sanding them down so it wont be so proud of the ship.

dont jump ship on the back of that picture.

Your right,it doesn't look the same quality...however we are now over 25% of the way through the series...can you really afford to lose that money?
I personally have decided to stick with it & kit bash if possible..like you I am a beginner but I have learnt to look at what more experienced guys are doing & the use or adapt the ones that I like or feel that I can do.
I started this build fully intent on painting it but am now considering staining & varnishing because by following others advice I have surprised myself at how good my planking is looking.OK mine wont be as good looking as Colins mainly because I haven't sorted each row of planks into virtually matching planks, however I have seen models were the random colouration looks quite good.
Your model is what you make it,as for the sails..yes they look naff but there is a place where you can buy egyptian cotton to make your own suit of sails that won't break the bank.
In the meantime i will be saving up to buy the Caldercraft version & use the knowledge gained on this build to make a hopefully museum quality piece.

Hi Rob, Thanks for the reply

yeh i'm not happy about the money I would be losing but I've been thinking about leaving for awhile. mainly due to all the things that now keep coming up as extras. the cotton may be cheap to buy but I keep thinking i shouldn't have to buy extras to replace naff parts or to finish it off to the level first shown.

If we knew what the completed base kit looks like it would make my decision easier but it seems that Deagostini keep changing the goal posts.

I doubt very much that victory on facebook is the one we are building. It looks like a much smaller model(hence the lack of detail)and does indeed look like a gift shop type of thing.

current builds : Lancaster 1/32 (Hachette)
Revell USS Kearsarge
Titanic Lifeboat

I started off with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

how can you tell its a plastic model? I thought the plastic kits of victory normally have more detail than the wood ones. I just got worried when I saw that model because it is model space's page and I am unaware of any other victory models they selling.

All's I was asking if any knew what the model is actually like and like I said i'm new to modelling

You are dead right Baz, what with the DeAg video, magazine and T.V ad I've seen several possible versions of this kit, I would love to see a complete basic unpainted version or even some PLANS (sorry for shouting but I get sick of asking for plans), nothing too detailed is required just a few drawings of what is coming over the next few months!
That being said, as a newby like you I am happy with the build because of all the help through the mag and the forum, although for the cost some things like double planked hull should have been included.
I was'nt going to 'kit-bash' when I first started, but to get decent quality you simply have to! (forum members, Colin, Karl etc to blame for that by pushing the boundaries, keep it up lads)
Come on Admin tell the makers to knock out some PLANS!Drool Drool

take a look at the mouldings at the front end and at the rear end it has more detail also look at the rudder brackets if thats not plastic its the best i have ever seen ,i know you were only asking ,.there are that many verieision of this model you cant comdine the lot, wonder what it would look like if you did ,just stick to the one we have when you are finnish you will be proud of it anny way its the rigging that makes this tye of model that the only thing people ask me about how do you know where the ropes go and is the only question i am asked all the time

Apart from the images of the model in question, there are a number of other images of the victory model that we are building, and have been very useful for me earlier on to get an insight into how the build is and will be developing.
Have a look through the image folders on the facebook site. BigGrin

On another note, does anyone (Tomick?) know the wood type that the real keel will be made from? Would I be correct in assuming walnut?

Best wishes,
Tom

The partwork Victory is most certainly not a reflection of the model shown on facebook, for starters the facebook model has no entry ports and the proud gun port linings to name just two of the many differences.

well i guess that clears that one up, thanks for the replies.

I just panicked when I saw that on their page and and with the changes they keep making.

Dont know why they have that on their page then, not good advertisement for them.

I've decided to stick it out a bit longer and see how it goes when the detailed parts start coming.

If you have a facebook account, go onto the Modelspace page and click on 'photos from others' - a few pages in there are loads of pics from what looks like one of the official builds used to market the product. I maybe wrong but its certainly our build and it looks mighty fine
