Hey guys BigGrin

Was just wondering how all you lot in South Africa are getting on with your builds and how you finding it?
I have just started the launch, am halfway with the planking and despite 1 slip it is starting to look very good for my very first effort at planking ever, I still wouldn't sail in it, I think it will be as waterproof as a teabagLOL
Current build : The Victory
Pending builds : none - yet
Built loads of bikes trucks planes and boats - all plastic kits.
on wish list - a 1:24 spitfire, in wood, plastic, just as long as I can build it :)

Hi
I have only received my first 2 editions so not much to do ,the first 4 bits went together rather well though(sic)the connon and anchor i have not touched yet as i was hoping to do them all together so they are all the same,i don't like the idea of doing one anchor now and another a year or so later as i feel i might not get them to look the same not sure if this is silly but will wait a while anyway it's a pity there is no list of parts available and what issue they come in.that would be a great help for planning the build.
Regards
Trev
If my ship is going down...i'm bloody well getting off

Hi
I'm at this stage also with Trev....1st 2 issues and waiting. After reading a LOT of
posts I also decided to paint my ship. Just to get to a place to buy the paint because in this one-horse town of mine you ill be lucky to get normal PVA.

I've built my canon and anchor, but the rest I'm gonna wait for the complete collection of fire-power.
Previous builts: Planes, cars and Cutty Sark, all plastic
Current : HMS Victory - of course!
Wish List : To finish the Victory.........

I also only have 1st 2 issues. Expecting next 4 shortly. Not much achieved so far.

I agree with Sydney I dont want to repeat the learning curve with each cannon I build.

Have purchased some tools and will buy some more tomorrow. Lot of time reading forum and researching tools and local suppliers.

Hi Sydney

Do a Google for the aviation shop, they are the guys I used here in Joburg, the website will have their number maybe they can help you out with the bits you need.

Hi ya'all

Waiting for my first issue(s) to be delivered, probably end October to middle November. In the meantime my HMS Pandora at 1:85 scale is keeping me busy. About half-way I'd say. Have been building her for about 18 months now, on and off (more off than on most of the time !!). Really a nice looking ship. For a first time build, I'd say she's looking "not to shabby".

By the way, I can recommend two really good Hobby Shops for "tall ship gear" ... EssWex Hobbies (011) 888 3619, NorthCliff corner Jhb (website under construction) and also Tool and Professional Services (011) 955 1243 on webpage www.toolandprof.co.za ... both these shops are good. They both carry Artesania spares for tall ships and should be able to accommodate any shortage(s) or specials. EssWex carry a lot of spare planking and other wooden items. They have been in the game for some 30 odd years.

I wish all members of the SA Forum well and enjoyable hours building the Victory. I come from plastics and r/c models, planes, pylon racers, r/c 4-wheel off road stuff, helicopters, a Leopard r/c tank and high powered model rocketry !! ... but these wooden ships !! ... they're something else !!

There is another very useful (and friendly) hobby shop in Centurion Wilberforce ... Hobby Mania on Pretoria (012) 663 3895. They also deal in Artesania stuff and can get bits n' pieces. Also have a selection of Artesania Tall Ships and in particular at this moment a Santa Ana 1784 at scale 1:84 which makes her 1250mm long x 950mm high and 450mm wide. It's an Artesania kit.

By the way, EssWex also carry a fair range of Tall Ships. They keep the kits in the right-hand-rear-corner of the shop. If I recall correctly, the owner is Dennis. Ask him to show you around. He's very pleasant and accomodating.

Eugene - thanks for these updates on shops, I am sure some of the guys in SA, especially those a little - um - out of the way will find the info useful. If any other guys in the forum can also just give a shout out to their local hobby shop - name and contact details - I am sure it will be hugely useful. As we start getting into planking etc these will be very useful.
Its great getting the shop names in the UK etc but it is just so much easier and convenient to have a good bunch of local contactsBigGrin BigGrin

Hi Guys,

Here's my 5 cents worth: For all the budding P.E. and Uitenhage model shipwrights, the best shop I've found so far in this area is Crafty Arts in the Walmer-Park Center, Port Elizabeth. If anyone has found any others, please let us know....

Apparently there are a few model ship clubs around here too, but I have no details yet.

hi
I just finished planking the launch for the 2nd time. I found I couldn't stop the planks from buckling inwards between the ribs, so sanded everything down and started again. Got it right 2nd time around, fortunately I had lots of left ofer planking from my previous ship. That's the drawback of part builds, not much spare material for mistakes!!! I am also painting my Victory, as my Endeavour is finished with clear varnish to show the planking. It was double planked with mahogany so it would have been a shame to paint it.

I'm about to cut the launch off the jig, and carry on....

Enjoy building, and all the brits out there, keep us in the past informed on how yours are going BigGrin
