Assemble the grating pieces received with this stage as you did before. Remove some of the grating by cutting along the red lines as shown in Step B of the instructions. Retrieve the leftover grating pieces from the previous stage and position it next to the pieces in this stage, as shown in Step C of the instructions. Glue the two parts together, making sure they are aligned, Then leave them to dry.

Once dry cut along the red lines to create two grating pieces with smooth sides, 10 x 13 squares each. As shown in Step D and E of the instructions. Smooth the edges of the two grating pieces with sandpaper.

Cut a Length of 2 x 3 x 300mm wooden strip to fit between the two grating pieces. Cut another length to fit along the long edge of the grating assembly. Glue these into position. Cut another length of 2 x 3 x 300mm wooden strip to fit along the other long side of the grating and glue into place. Then cut and glue another two shorter lengths to complete the frame, Once dry, Smooth the edges and round the corners as with the previous gratings. Paint the grating with clear varnish.

Glue the grating to the main deck in the position shown in Step J of the instructions.

Stage 32 contains: Guns, Barrels, Dummy gun mounts, Gun carriages.

Retrieve the wooden strip from Stage 15, Cut eight 12mm lengths from the strip.
There are two ways of building ladders, this is the first.
Start by gluing one of the 12mm lengths into the end groove of one of the ladder sides, continue along the ladder side, gluing 12mm strips into each of the grooves. Apply a drop of glue to the edge of each step and fit it into each corresponding groove of the other upright. Check that the slots and the steps are aligned.

The second method of assembling the ladders is to first glue a 12mm strip into the grooves at either end of one ladder side, then glue the other ladder side to the free ends of the 12mm lengths. Apply a drop of glue to each of the grooves in the sides, and then slide in the remaining 12mm lengths.

When the glue has completely dry, use sandpaper to smooth the edges and corners of the assembled ladder. Paint the ladder with clear varnish.

Test fit the ladder in the framed hole, As shown in step J of the instructions. Apply glue to the contact points and place into position.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 33 Contains: Nails, Gun port strips, Dummy gun mounts.

Cut the two strips from the fret boards and remove the squares from them.. Smooth the edges of the strips with sandpaper. Hold one of the strips against the side of the forecastle as shown in Step C of the instructions. Check that it fits the curvature of the frames. Mark the width of the frame obscuring the gun port onto the strip.

Separate four dummy gun mounts from the fret board and smooth them with sandpaper. Before continuing with this step it is advisable that you look at the following steps to see how the parts will be used.. Glue mounts over the two end ports, and then glue two mounts onto the middle port, Either side of the lines marked in the previous step, so that they will fit either side of the frame.

Paint the inside of the strip that will be visible above the forecastle deck with wood stain. As shown in Step F of the instuctions. Allow the stain to completely dry. Apply glue to the contact points of the strip the frames and deck, then hold the strip in place.
The front of the strip should be flush with the frame, matching the curvature , as shown in Step I of the instructions. Fix the strip into place with some nails, securing it to the frames and the deck. Be careful not to damage the forecastle deck when doing this.

Prepare the second strip in the same way and fix it to the Port side of the forecastle.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 34 contains: Ladder sides, Gun port strip, Wooden strip 1 x 4 x 100mm.

Remove the squares from the gun port strip. Smooth the strip with sandpaper. Test fit the strip along the Port side of the ship, aft of the strip fitted in the previous Stage. Check that it is flush with the surrounding parts and adjust the shape if necessary. Glue a dummy gun mount over the rear port of the strip. Paint the strip with the same wood stain as used in the previous strips.

Apply glue to the contact points and place the strip into position. Fix the aft end of the strip with nails as indicated by the red arrows shown in Step F of the instructions
This is how the inside of the strip should look from the other side, see Step H of the instructions.

Retrieve the two barrels that came with Stage 32. Paint them with clear varnish. Allow the varnish to totally dry, Mark the bands around them with a black pen. As shown in Step J of the instructions.

To ease the placement of the gun port blanking squares at the rear of the gun ports, I glued the squares in place at this stage rather than later on.
You should ensure that each square is firmly glued in place to prevent it from coming loose when the port squares are later drilled to suit the gun spigots.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 36 contains: Dummy gun mounts, gun port strips, Barrels.

Remove the gun port strips from the fret. And then remove the squares from them. Smooth the strips with Sandpaper then test fit the strip along the starboard side of the ship up against the strip fitted in the previous stage. Marking the points where the frame blocks some of the gun port.

Glue a dummy gun mount over the first two ports in the strip, Make sure the mount at the front of the strip does not pass the line made in the previous step. Apply glue to the sides of the frames and deck that will be in contact with the strip. Fit the strip into place and nail into position to secure it.
Glue two more mounts over the inside of the two rear ports, As shown in Step H of the instructions.

Repeat Steps B to H to fit the second strip to the port side. When the glue has completely dry, sand the aft edges of the strips flush with the transom.

Stage 37 Contains: Guns, Gun port strip, Gun carriages.

Smooth the edges of the strip received with this stage with sandpaper. Test fit the strip in place (above the strip from the previous stage) engaging it with the one in front. Paint the inner surface of the strip with wood stain.

Apply glue to the frames and decks that will be in contact with the strip. Place the strip into position and secure to the frames with nails as before. When the glue is completely dry remove the part of the strip that extends past the transom with sandpaper or a file.

Use a file to smooth the surface of the strips along the starboard side of the ship removing the heads of any nails that are not flush. Run your fingers along the surface of the strips to check for any uneven areas. The surface needs to be completely smooth.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 38 contains: Guns. Gun port strip, Gun carriges.

Smooth the edges of the strip received with this stage. Test fit the strip into place flush with the strip below and engaged with the one in front. Then paint the inner surface of the strip with wood stain. Apply glue to the frames and deck that will be in contact with the strip. Place the strip into position engaging it properly with the strip in front as shown in Step D of the instructions. Secure the strip to the frames with nails as before. Once dry cut and sand the end of the strip flush with the transom.

Sand the strips to prepare them for coating strips, you need to make the surface as smooth and flush as possible. Sand along the stripes working from bow to stern.

Starting from the bow file the frames to try and create a smooth curve in preparation for the planking. In the mid section of the hull there is less of a curve between the frames, so you can use a large sanding block here. Recover one of the planking strips supplied with Stage 23 and hold it around the frames at the bow. Slowly move the plank towards the keel the plank should be flush with the frames at all points.
File the frames at the stern to create a smooth curve for the strips. As with the bow, check the shape with a planking strip. Repeat Steps G to J of the instructions for other side.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 39 contains: Wooden strips 2 x 5 x 250mm.

Before proceeding, check that you have removed any nail heads from the strips to create an even surface. Take a 2 x 5 x 250mm strip and immerse it in warm water. After a couple of minutes remove it and wipe away excess water from it. Place the strip around the bow in the area shown in Step A of the instructions. It should end halfway across a frame. Then apply glue to the contact areas. Fix the strip into position around the curve by nailing it to the frames. As indicated in Step B of the instructions. Cut the front of the strip so that it is aligned with the false keel, you will need to leave a gap of 5mm here for the stem. As shown in Step C of the instructions.

Hold another strip against the frames, aft of the first and glue into place. Glue a further two strips aft of the one in the previous step then nail the last strip to the frames to hold it to the curve.

When the glue is completely dry cut the strip so it is aligned with the transom piece. Repeat Steps A to F on other side of the hull. Cut the front of the strip at the bow to create a 5mm gap as shown in Step H of the instructions.

Take another strip and fix it above the the first, you need to make sure that the two rows of planks are staggered, as indicated by the arrow, as shown in Step I of the instructions. Fix another plank onto the other side of the hull. Make sure you leave a 5mm gap between the strips at the bow.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 40 contains: Guns, Gun carriages, Wooden strip 1 x 4 x 100mm, Ladder sides, Nails.

Glue a plank aft of the one in the previous stage. Glue two more strips in the same row, one short and one long to keep them staggered. Nail the last plank in place to secure it around the curve. Cut the end in line with the transom and the plank below. Cut away any parts of the planks that are blocking the gun ports. Fix another plank at the bow forward of the one below as shown circled in Step E of the instructions to keep them staggered. Glue another strip aft of the first then fit another strip that ends 5mm forward of frame 11. Once dry, cut away the strips that are covering the gun ports with a knife.

Repeat Step A to G of the instructions on the starboard side of the ship.
Make sure you maintain a 5mm gap between the strips at the bow.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 41 contains: Wooden strips 2 x 5 x 250mm.

Glue and nail a fourth strip around the port bow. Glue a full strip (1) aft of the first, and then an 80mm strip (2) aft of that, see Step B of the instructions. Glue and nail a final strip to this row. This strip will extend past the transom. Leave to dry and remove any parts of the strip covering the gun ports.

Glue another strip to the port side starting at frame 2. Fit another two strips to complete this row.
Bend another strip around the bow with the other end positioned above the strip fitted in Step E. This should create a wedge shaped gap between the two strips at the bow. As shown in Step G of the instructions. Secure the strip with glue and nails. Complete the rest of the row back to the transom.

Repeat Steps A to I for the starboard side, when glue is dry cut away any excess strip from the stern.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 42 contains: Ladder sides, Wooden strips 1 x 4 x 100mm, Wooden strip 2 x 3 x 300mm, Grating pieces.

Cut nine 10mm lengths from the 2 x 3mm strip. Glue a 10mm strip into the grooves at either end of one ladder side. Then glue the other ladder side to the free ends of the 10mm strips. Apply a drop of glue to each of the grooves in the sides and slide in the remaining 10mm lengths. When dry use sandpaper to smooth the edges and corners of the assembled ladder.

Fit another strip around the bow starting at the edge of the false keel. Secure the strip with glue and nails, use another three strips to complete the row. Place another row of strips above the previous one. When completely dry, cut the surplus from the planks at the bow and stern.
Repeat Steps E to I on the starboard side of the ship.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.
