BigGrin Hi All

Another 1/12 Tamiya offering with etch upgrades this is the car that clinched the 1968 championship for Graham Hill and Lotus were also the first team to take advantage of the FIA's change in sponsorship rules so that Tobacco advertising could be utilised. Before this change all cars ran in there national racing colors and Lotus's eye catching white, red and gold paintwork representing the 'Gold Leaf' brand of cigarettes was a show stopper. This of course opened the flood gates for all the classic racing cars we remember advertising all those different brands of cigarettes.

The kit is up to tamiya's usual high standard with no flash present and finely detailed parts, the rubber tyres are well moulded showing the tread pattern used at the time. The etch and turned metal intake trumpets are a joy to behold along with Tamiya's excellent instructions.

There are aftermarket metal radius roads, tie rods ends and turned aluminum shocks for the Lotus 49: and hopefully soon there will be the correct machined aluminum rear wheels available.

BigGrin Hi All

A long forgotten version of the 49B was the so called Ducktail car that raced for the first three races of the 1968 F1 season. The wedge shaped cowl over the engine was there to provide downforce on the rear wheels. pictures here:-

https://www.google.co.uk...UO-idgAb18YqwBg#imgrc=_

This early season version was soon replaced by the high wing version as depicted in the model although if any of you have ever seen the documentary video 'life on the limit' [ highly recommended ] the perils of any car loosing these high wings could prove fatal to any driver in the days when F1 in my opinion was pure racing with every driver going heads on for success unlike it is today.

There is also the later design of wing with a triple aerofoil design as can be seen in one of my pencil drawings of the Lotus 49. I did the drawing below 22 years ago (1994) and the driver is Austria's Jochen Rindt - the only F1 driver ever to have won the title posthumously (1970) having accrued enough points before his death to still be ahead by the season's end. Hope you don't mind me showing my work?
