Having not built this model I am fishing in the dark but we need a datum point to take some measurements from ie the last gunport as this is a fixed point . Not 100% sure of what you mean but if the 2 planks are the same height as the gallery then when the planks and gallery are capped they will then still be the same height...which is ok. Steve

Hi, I have been comparing your build to mine and the only difference I can see is that on your build you seem to have 1 vertical plank below the stern gallery whilst on mine I have 2. If this is correct then your stern gallery piece will be sitting 5mm lower than mine. Other than that everything else on your build seems to match mine. Graeme

Hi John,
I have been having a good look at your problem and from the pics on your build diary there is nothing that stands out as being obviously wrong. With so much build-up have gone on, its difficult to be sure as to exactly where you have strayed off the straight and narrow and the solution I propose, all be it unorthodox, is an alternative to having to take the drastic step of stripping back to locate the problem and to put it right. There is no guarantee it will perfectly resolve the issue but I think its the lesser of two evils, the choice is for you to make.
Here is what I propose. Extend the height of the Stern gallery piece.
The Port and Starboard inner bulwarks are lined with 2 x 5mm planks, line these as instructed.
Trim down the bulwark inner height to 8mm at the stern tapering down to the edge of the poop deck, prep them ready for the capping to be fitted.
Carefully cut or sand the top of the stern piece across its length so it is flat, this will give you a good level base for the next step. Take a 2mm thick piece of ply (if you have some), large enough to give you the height and width you need. If you don't have spare ply then you could use 2 planks glued side by side.
Shape the new ply piece across its top and sides before finally fitting.
Attach the new piece to the top of the stern section you cut. You can use pins to help secure if necessary by carefully drilling pin holes into the edge of the ply but it is non load bearing so PVA glue should suffice.
Finally, once happy with the overall fit use fine filler to hide any joints and sand everything smooth. Once painted it shouldn't be seen. Care and preparation are key so take you time with it.

What can I say? Many thanks. I really appreciate you going through this for me. Yes I agree and I would be reluctant stripping the build back at this stage without knowing what the problem was or what to look for.
You solution sounds excellent and I doubt anyone will notice once it’s finished off and painted, apart from that aficionados. It will have to be planks though, as I don't have any ply apart from some spare ribs. They are thicker but I could sand them back. Would that be better than planks do you think?
I will get on to it straight away and let you know how it goes.

Hi John, that's coming along rather nicely. This was the only option I could see for you other than a strip back so well done. At least you now have the height you need and you can always trim down the overall height of the stern piece later if necessary after the bulwark caps are in place, main thing is I think we have gotten you over the initial hurdle..... Well that all took a bit longer to finish of than I was expecting but at last, the goal is reached and I may have a break after working pretty solidly for nearly a year. Or maybe I won’t!
Up to issue 60 with the hull but then shot forward to 70 because of the work I have already done on the masts and, with a couple more weeks work (ha ha), through to issue 80 I will be exactly 2/3rds through the build, including a break for tiling.
Since the hull had to go upside down again to complete the wales, I took the opportunity to repair some of the tiles that had fallen off and, ended up ripping off nearly all the tiles on the keel and relaying them. It looks and feels a lot better but I can’t say they that fixing the tiles has been fun!I am pleased with how the main deck turned out using treenails (cocktail sticks) rather than marking the nails with a pencil but also now wishing I had cut the planks to their correct lengths instead of marling the plank joints. I thought of doing that with the poop deck but realised it wouldn’t work because of where the supports fell. In the end, I didn’t think it was really a lot of extra work but they look so much better.However, I wasn’t at all happy with the colour of the quarter deck, it was far too dark. The image here is the upper gun deck which was the same colour. That meant a few hours with white spirit and a cloth taking it all off and starting again. I used a cloth to apply the stain this time rather than a brush and it’s much better.

This was the colour of the quarterdeck before removing all of the stain (2nd and 3rd pics): After:On to the final stages and finally got to use the Lego bricks I bought earlier in the year, for the cabin.Also decided to drill a couple more hole in the deck and wrap some thick tread around the ships wheel. I know it will hardly notice but I know it’s there!
Overall, I’m pleased with how it’s progressing and is probably the best I could hope for a first timer compared to the gorgeous work in some of these diaries. Just a little paint touching up to do, relay one of the tiles and draw in the plank joins, hopefully for the last time.
Final pic is my working area nice and tidy again ready to start on the yards......tomorrow?
