No brake lines as far as I can see. Now the landing gear will have a lot of moving parts that will need to extend from and retract into a small housing with very tight fit (we'll see more about that in issue 35). So I'm a little bit apprehensive about adding parts that could get the whole thing tangled up.

A wise and well thought out plan Michael. Maybe wait and see as you say, though worth a look at some extra detail if the space and desire is there? Keep up the good work and well done again, I'm sure this will look awesome whatever you do.

Welcome back, friends of the Danger Zone.

My news agent has returned and so has this build.

We didn't miss all that much. With issue 30 the left landing gear leg is finished and with issues 31-33 the right one is built as well.

Another two-fer

Issue 34

We receive the parts for the wings hinge mechanisms and stuff them away until St. Nevermore Day. Why did we receive these today? It is a mystery.

Issue 35

Housing for the left landing gear.

To make the housing some of these plastic parts need to be bent, so do it slowly and carefully like PE. The instructions advise us to glue the walls together with instant adhesive. This will actually not work real good due to the small contact area and the shearing forces of the bent parts working specifically against how instant adhesive actually works. I've instead opted for welding the walls together with acetone, which works like a charm.

The gear itself is then loosely fitted into the housing (it will be fitted fully in one of the next issues)

We also install this cute little knob on one of the landing gear doors.

Looking good Greyhawk Cool

Great idea using acetone to weld the walls together, I'm guessing something like a MEK glue would also work for this

Actually I tried that, but it was too strong for the thin walls and it started to disolve the plastic entirely. Luckily that location is hidden. So I'd really recommend just using acetone directly.

Hey Grayhawk!
This is Tommy from Rome.

First of all thanks a lot for this great topic! I'm building the same model and it's a lot of fun.
I'm also painting it a little bit, to give some parts a nice relic aspect.

I would need some help about the flaps.
I've mounted everything as it should be, but looks like the flaps go down a little bit, even if they are in the retracted position.
I'm reluctant to complete the wings assembly and as I'm scared that this "going down" attitude might interfere with the wings sweep system.
What about your flaps? Are they in complete horizontal position?

Thanks,

Tommy

Hey Tommy, I'm only just now back with my model. I'll send the pictures I promised later today.

High time for an update. On the other hand this is the first worthwhile moment for an update since the mid of september

With issue 36 a mirror image of the landing gear housing was delivered and made for the right side.

Issue 37 was a pure delivery and solely contained the motor for the landing gear extension/retraction.

Issue 38 contained a whole bunch of mechanical/electric parts for the landing gear mechanism, all of which but two were added to the growing pile of untouched parts.

In this issue we finally add an axle to the landing gear housings and install them as well as a lever for the motor on the central framework.

Note it's absurdly difficult if not downright impossible to install these parts as the instructions suggest at the same time. Instead install just one of the housings, fix the axle to that and then install the second housing while fixing the axle to it.

Note also that for this and the following building phases 2/3rds of the hull elements have to be removed again. If (like a certain poster on these boards who shall remain nameless) you used instant glue to improve the fit of hull parts, yo u can now start kicking yourself.

And the gear mechanism in motion

(it was me, I'm the nameless poster)

Thanks, dave. Updated the link, it should work correctly now.

Oh boy, this is a big one.

I've purposefully held back on issue 39 until todays issue 40 arrived, because doing things like the instructions advice can result in permanent damage to the landing gear

Both issue contain parts for the pylons and issue 40 also holds a new test board.

Putting together the pylons is no big thing as long as all screw holes are there. For todays parts, the hole was missing. My 0.25mm threading bit wouldn't bite in the material, so I drllled the necessary whole with a 0.3mm drill bit and filled it back up with the removed material. Works like a charm.

The pylons are then added to the previously removed landing gear doors (the instructions confuse left and right here)

The doors are reinstalled (in open position and with extended landing gear!). One needs to make extra sure all parts are sitting perfectly correct, otherwise the tabs of the open/close mechanism won't connect. The tolerance range is... very very tiny.

Delay following the 2nd part of issue 39s instructions (mating the landing gear motor with it's case) until you receive the test board in issue 40. The motors functinality is tested and this NEEDS to be done while it is not in the case yet, otherwise you risk destroying the motor or moving parts of the case.

Thereafter the case and motor can be mated.

The instructions are again wrong about the order of installation of the motor on the frame. The two levers of the mechanism must be connected first, only then can the motor be placed and fixed. It does not work the other way around.

With the test board you will also ensure that the IR receiver in the cockpit works correctly (any TV remote will do), as well as the motors for the flaps.

Hate to say this, you can't use this build as an entry for "Build of the Year 2016".

It has been brought to our attention that this build has been posted into another forum, which is in breach of rule #3 of this competition..."3. All builds must have a build diary posted exclusively on ModelSpace."

Unfortunately we will have to void this build from entry, can you please edit the 'build of the year entry' from your post #1 Crying

No biggie, it would have felt somewhat weird anyway what with this being a Hachette kit.

I may have something else in the works anyway (it is a secret still).

It appears that this F-14A is being released in the UK, likely Dec/Jan

Bit of internet trouble at the moment, so here's a video of the swept wing mechanism in action. Full build report will be coming when the net is more stable.
