Seeing as I have now finished the Phantom, pictures to follow shortly after the matte coating has been completed.

In the meantime I decided to start another aircraft, but this time something slightly different. I suppose you could say this is similar to the Metal Earth kits you can buy, the difference with this is obviously the detail but also this doesnt fit together with tabs that you have to fold and twist so looks much neater.

Here we have a Jasmin Models 1/48 F6F-5 Hellcat that is primarily made of Photo etch with some additional plasitc molded parts. The photo etch is fantastic with lots of lovely detail, however the molding on the plastic parts could be better and they will need some clean up.

I will be building this as is out of the box, I may look to respray some of the plastic parts, perhaps just in a black primer to add some contrast to the finished build.

Hope you enjoy this build Cool

Construction has started with the cockpit

Looks like a great kit. I didn't know you could get anything like it.

If I didn't already have so many kits to build I would get myself the 1/72 Valkyrie Full PE Model.

Are you going to build it with its' wings folded or out?

They are great kits, but the metal is quite soft and the instructions are sometimes a bit vague. They also have Tiny attachment points so if you are not careful previously glued bits keep pinging off as you add more detail.

Really like the look of this one, the detail on the etch looks very nice too. For me personally, it's my worst nightmare but best of luck with it and hope you have some hair left when it's completeLaugh

Looks a cracking kit Dave and you've made a fantastic start!! Drool Cool ThumpUp

I hope that you enjoy your build and have great fun with it. You say you may paint the plastic bits black to give a different element to the build, have you thought about going further and painting the internals such as cockpit, engine, etc, in their proper colours, in much the same way as some of those full colour cutaway drawings that you see in aircraft reference books? Might be a nice idea but more work obviously?!

Thanks all for your comments and stopping by Cool

I did consider painting the whole thing in a cut away fashion but in the end I decided I would keep it simple, if you can call this simple LOL

The cockpit is finished and the framework is almost completed. At this point its all quite delicate and you have to be really careful not to bend all the frames, they will be reinforced with stringers further down the line.

Its really starting to take its shape now and Im having a lot of fun building it although in some parts it is infuriating as you need 4 hands sometimes LOL

I still havent decided if I will do the open or folded wings, Im currently leaning slightly towards folded but will make a final decision nearer the time.

Im finding it really difficult to take pictures of this because of all the reflections Cursing

It's looking great, those frames look extremely delicate. How about having one wing folded and the other out.

Hi Dave

That looks like a real test on the eyesight and the patience but you are making a very neat job of putting this one together.

Hope it continues well.

Thanks all for your comments Cool

Although it's very fiddly I am enjoying it immensely and yes, it is very hard on the eyes even with the optivisor as the light always seems to be shinning on the area you need to put the tiny tab the tiny hole Cursing
