Yes Kev it is an iconic image for sure.I cant imagine being in the control tower during a battle. You are pretty exposed up there and only have a few inches of steel armor to protect you.
I would imagine that the control tower was not occupied at the time of the pearl harbor attack.I hope not.

Yeah, must have been scary as hell being up there when under attack!!
Keep up the good work Carl, I'm not a ship modeller but I do enjoy some of the WWII stuff and this build is particularly interesting because of it's place in history - well done.

Cheers guys. The bridge is now finished and installed and the rest of the boats are installed on the deck.Next step is the smoke stack and then the aft fire control tower. The final major assembly is to add the cranes and second catapult. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Thanks everyone. The rear fire control tower is now finished and ready for paint.I left off the searchlights until after painting the platform. This was a very fiddly piece to assemble. The railings needed multiple bends and the small masts were very fragile and difficult to handle. So whilst I am waiting for the aft mast to dry I finished the funnel and installed it. I will have to hand paint the blue on the mast because masking it is impossible.I also installed the second catapult on the aft and the crane used to lift the spotter plane out of the water and onto the catapult.
