I would like to ask for some advice please. As I have now finished planking the hull, I was going to varnish it. How many layers of varnish do people apply? Should I also varnish the deck as I am worried that if I varnish the deck now the deck furniture may not stick very well to it.
Thanks for any help Xander

Hi Xander it all depends on what finish you are after if you want the decks nice and shiny then two or three coats but if you want a dull look just one to seal the deck . I have never had problems with things sticking to the deck if you use water based varnish hope this helps rgd Martyn Building ? Completed. Soliei Royal . Sovereign of the Seas . Virginia . Thanks Martyn I have decided to put one coat of varnish on the deck but 2 or 3 on the hull. Will post a picture when completed --- hopefully sometime soon. Regards Xander

Sorry about last post. i pressed the wrong button. What i meant to say was that I have done some more work on my Dhow. i have made the mizzen brackets next followed by the stern embellishments. i made these in one piece and then glued them into position. This was followed by the hatchways, canopy pillars and barrel supports. The hull and deck were varnished with a clear satin varnish but the hatches were varnished using a gloss varnish. A personal preference but I like the contrast between the two types of varnish. Like others before me I have found this to be a very enjoyable and fun build. enclosing some pictures of my progress so far. Xander

Just an update on my progress on the Dhow. The barrels were staiined with Tamiya Linoleum Deck Brown and then given a coat of gloss varnish. I rubbed some wood glue on the end of the thread to stiffen it and this allowed the thread to go through the eyelets more easily. I found that lightly glueing the barrels to their brackets meant they remained in situ whilst the thread was placed in position. Then the chest was made. It was stained and varnished before putting the hinges and handles on. finally it was glued on to the deck. The amphora were painted with Tamiya Wooden Deck Tan, varnished with a gloss varnish and placed in position. Will now start on the crate. xander attached the following image(s):
