Hello everyone, hope everyone has had a delightful Christmas and New Years. I look on the forum most days but unfortunately do not have the time to post too much nowadays, please forgive my rudeness. Anyway, I have committed (a little too much) time to my model over the festive period and thought I should share some pictures of it with you all. I do not have a build diary so I thought some one-off photos now and then are fine in the 'general discussion' section! Firstly, here is my completed launch: As some of you may remember, I had from the outset decided to double-plank my model, with lime for the upper half and walnut for the lower deck. A number of reasons influenced my decision; I had seen my old mans bounty model which was built in this way, and was very happy with it, I was a little apprehensive at getting the first layer perfect as this is my first wooden build, and also I was set on a walnut finish for the bottom hull (which would compliment my intention of walnut-lined gunports. With the main planking complete I added some of the veneer to see how it looked, and lined some of the gunports. I am intending to add a second layer that will be set back slightly in order to achieve a step for where the lid would sit. This can be seen in the lower gunport of one of the pictures: This is the intended look when I begin the walnut veneer for the lower hull (my plans for completion over Christmas were scuppered when I heard of CMB 'out-of-action' until 10th January!). The hull looks very rough-and-ready at the moment with rows of veneer half-finished etc. The port frames need a tidy up which will be achieved with the second framing later on. Finally, my attention was turned to the keel; the supplied one not really suitable in my opinion for a natural finish (and not entirely matching the walnut on the hull), so I endeavored to veneer that also, which when sanded and later oiled, looks like a solid piece - if you veneer it carefully it is very hard to see the joints! Thats about it for the Christmas break I think! Overall I am very pleased with it, and looking forward to tackling the inside of the gallery (I was inspired by the Surprise build link which someone posted on here over the summer). Happy building everyone! Regards, Tom

Looking good there benny. I like how you are making the kit your own. The Walnut definitely sets it all off. That's why I chose it on my Surprise build over the supplied Sapele. Keep it up mate and you'll have an amazing ship at the end. Chris. On the bench 1/350 Revell Tirpitz Platinum Edition (Pontos PE and Wooden deck) plus extra Eduard PE set and extra MK1 door sets.

Thanks for the nice replies everyone Paul - the lime veneer is 1 x 5, think I just ordered about 30 strips or so. I think there will be enough but if not I'll just get a few extra. I have ordered 65 1x4 walnut for the lower hull to finish sometime in the future. The gunports are 0.5 x 4 walnut, with the same for the second layer of lining when I get round to it! Cheers, Tom

However, the original hull was varnished and then lightly sanded with wet&dry which makes it nice and hard, and also provides a smooth surface for the glue to adhere to - I think it would have difficulty attaching to bare wood. All the best! Tom Ooh might have a look at that!

Thanks Paul PS i am going to do that other partwork are you!! I am going for the natural finish, so achieving the yellow effect is not essential for me. However, I have noticed that with a coat of antique oil, the lime veneer does go a slightly golden colour, which I think will go very well with the walnut veneer and later mahogany wales. I've had a look at it, if temptation intervenes and I see it in a shop then I might get the first issue for a closer look, however I doubt I could afford two partworks a week, and my impression is that our Victory is far more detailed! Cheers, Tom
