Kev's 1:72 Aircraft Models #3 - Supermarine Spitfire F Mk.22 Options

Hello all,

Number three in my series of 1:72 model aircraft builds.

Built mainly out of the box, as per the rest of the aircraft in my series and with minimal or zero weathering as these are purely for display in my cabinet.

The only modifications/added details that I made to this kit are as follows:

1 - Three lightening holes which are quite obvious on the real aircraft were missing from the headrest support bracket in the cockpit, these were drilled out.

2 - Seat harness added, made from Tamiya masking tape then painted.

3 - Tiny squares of white decal added to side of the tyre walls to represent the ‘anti-creep’ marks on the real thing.

4 - Whip aerial made out of a single strand from a ‘Hog’s Hair’ artists brush.

5 - Aluminium foil added to the inside of the three 'recognition lights' on the underside of the fuselage to make them more reflective and realistic.


Apologies for this being a bit photo heavy, but I took loads of photos and couldn’t decide which ones to use so I thought I’d just show them all:


Airfix 1:72 Supermarine Spitfire F Mk.22

Built in the markings of No.603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron, Royal Air Force, RAF Turnhouse, Edinburgh, Scotland, 1951.

I have included the obligatory ‘penny shots’ for size reference - these Spitfires are a bit small in 1:72 scale!! I have also included a couple of shots on a paper display base and some black and white ‘nostalgia’ shots.

Am not a fan of the four or five bladed Spit's, but what a fantastic end result, well done ThumpUp

The F Mk.22 was considered by many to be the ultimate Spitfire which shared only a passing resemblance to its early Spitfire ancestors. It had the more powerful Griffon engine as well as a larger tail unit and cut-down rear fuselage, the F Mk.22 was the most powerful Spitfire to see service, as well as the most capable. Serving in only small numbers and too late for the Second World War, the F Mk.22 was the penultimate land based variant of the classic Spitfire design.

Spitfire HP more than doubled from the Mk.I to the Mk.22/24, hence the change of prop type. When the engines got more powerful there was only a few ways for a propeller to convert the increased horsepower into more thrust; get bigger in diameter, wider blades or more blades.
Getting bigger in diameter was usually a problem since diameter is limited by the landing gear length. Spitfire HP more than doubled between the Mk.I and Mk.22 & 24, but the landing gears legs stayed short, so the prop ended up with more blades.
Another issue is that the prop has to be big enough to absorb the engine power at high altitude where the air is thin (low density). A fighter that flies at high altitude has to have 'more propeller' than the same HP fighter that is limited to a lower altitude.

The Spitfire is an example of a fighter where the 'working' altitude of the prop had to be designed for also increased significantly over its production life.

On the other hand, you want to stay with just a few blades if you could because (think of the prop blade path) more blades are more likely to get in the wake turbulence (or even sonic disturbance) of the proceding blade which reduces the ability to convert horsepower into thrust.

Thankyou very much guys for all of the nice comments, greatly appreciated and glad you like it.

Some interesting info there Tom about the workings of multi-blade propellers. I must admit I never used to like the later Spits either but they've grown on me to the point where now I like them as much as the earlier marks, though I still think the Mk.IX is the best looking of all of them even if it does have a four bladed prop up front - seems to have the best of the earliest designs mixed with some of the best of later designs?

Hi Kev,

Your Spit build has turned out to be at a very high level of building skills, it's really a treat to look through your pictures and admire how it's all come together for you. The panel lines are at perfection as with the decals exact in ever way, and to build it in 1:72 it's a fantastic job and I wish you well on your entry.

@ Tom - I haven't done a build diary for this to show it coming together Tom, as it's part of my series of built 1:72 aircraft models which I'm doing and in which I won't be showing anything other than the finished result as was explained in the first paragraph of build #1 here:

They are just small, uncomplicated, 'fun' builds in between the main diaries that I already have running on the forum, one of which is my entry for this years' competition though unfortunately I won't be able to finish that in time, but it will be resumed some time soon and completed next year? Therefore I can't enter this model even though it was started this year in September as I already have an entry and I believe the rules don't allow more than one entry per member?
