Before the interuptor gear was developed some pilots actually did shoot their own propellers off trying to work out a 'fire by sight' method. A French pilot first managed a sort of solution by fitting steel deflectors to his wooden prop - you just had to hope the bullet didn't rebound 180 degrees! He did score some kills using it though.
When the Germans first introduced the true interuptor gear there was a rumour throughout the Allied pilots that they had in fact developed a 'Death Ray'!Blink
