This is the beginning of my second build log, the first being the Sultan Dhow. On opening the box, my first impression was this is a much larger build and therefore more complex and far more time consuming. The instructions consist of a sheet of written instructions, some pages of pictorial instructions and several pages of plans. The written instructions are sparse and very basic but the colour pictures are large and go some way to compensate for the lack of detail in the written ones. The plans seem to be good. The one gripe I have is that Occre fold all these up in several places which makes it difficult to straighten them out. Why can't they put them in the form of a booklet making them much easier to follow? So far I have removed the frames and dry fitted them. There is a little bit of play with them and I will have to be careful to align them at 90 degrees to the hull. That's my next thing to do, so see you all soon. So I am trying to align the frames at 90 degrees to the hull. I used an engineers square to clamp the frame on the hull whilst using wood glue to cement it permanently. I put a tiny bit of ca glue on either side of the frame, held it for a few seconds whilst the ca glue dried, removed the clamp and then i could proceed to the next frame while the wood glue was drying. The 3 false decks were then fitted and one of the main decks cut out prior to planking. The wood that has been supplied for the deck planking is not the best quality. The edges are frayed and some of the pieces are split. I am going to persevere with this wood in the hope that it will not really be noticeable. Thinking ahead i am debating whether to stain the decks a light colour and then to varnish them. I still have plenty of time to make this decision but at the moment I am thinking of a clear varnish only. Enclosing a few photos of progress so far. xander attached the following image(s):

I had a similar problem with aligning the frames at 90 degrees when building my Sultans Dhow. My solution was to add additional supports between the ribs. These additions made from some 12mm X 4mm Pine stripwood I had in my garage kept the frames at the required 90 degree angle and also added some strength to the frame. I am attaching a picture to show how this worked Gil GilShapley attached the following image(s): Current Build:- [color=blue]Stash Avro Lancaster (Full Kit)plus some extra issues I picked up at a good price [color=blue]Built:- Norman Catapult by Mantua,Roman Catapult by Mantua,HMS Victory,HMS Victory XSection,Focker DB1,Bismark,English Carronade Titanic Lifeboat,American Civil War Gatling,Hummer,Sopwith Camel F1,Occre Jupiter ,OcCre Wagon, Latina Arab Dhow, Eaglemass Orrery OcCre Rogers 119 [color=red][color=red]RB7,OcCre Missippi River Boat, Model Airways Fokker DR1 OcCre London L>C>C 106 Ugears Scrambler, Ugears Hexapod Explorer UGears Off-Road Vehicle

Last update before Xmas from a very windy part of the UK. I have now started to plank the decks using the wood that came with the kit. As i proceed I am thinking that as the wood is of such poor quality i should have ordered better wood. The strips are frayed along the edges and some of the pieces are actually split. Now I have started I will persevere with them. I have enclosed a photo of one such piece showing the edges. Will let you know after Xmas what the decks look like when I have finished planking them. I am hoping the edges will not be too noticeable when cemented in place. I haven't as yet decided whether to stain and varnish the decks or just use varnish. In the meantime a happy Xmas and New Year to all and of course Happy Modelling. Regards Xander xander attached the following image(s):

Looking good Xander. Having never built a Occre kit I don't know how many planks they put in but sorting through them and using the best ones for the centre of the decks and the dodgey ones for the edges as they will be covered up by the waterways . Happy New Year to everybody. The decks have now been planked and for the moment dry fitted. For the caulking I decided to just use a soft pencil and rub it along the edge of the planks. For the trenails I made a small indentation in the planks using a pin and then used a sharp pencil to colour in the hole. I am not sure if any of the lower decks will be visible when the boat is finished but I decided to plank these now as it would only take a short time to do. Will carry on now with the rest of the decks and then cement them in place. Regards Xander xander attached the following image(s):

The decks have now been cemented in place and this was followed by the bulkheads. Although the instructions said to stain the inner surface i have decided to lone these with 0.5 x 5mm sapelli strips. The gun port cut outs were cemented on to the bulkheads prior to cementing the bulkheads in place. At this stage i decided to paint the cut outs black. It would have been much better if I had painted these before cementing them as I would have been able to get a better finish with the paint. Now ready to begin the the first layer of planking. I have decided not to follow the instructions. They suggest planking over the gun port holes and then cutting them out. I am going to plank up to and around the holes as I think that for me will be easier.I am also aware that minor errors will not be visible when a second layer of planking is placed. This might not be an ideal way of looking at things but for me I am not too worried if perfection is not achieved at every stage as long as the final result looks ok and enjoying building it is the main aim. Now started the first layer of planking. I decided to paint the gunport black after i had cemented them into position. Would have been much easier to have painted them before fixing them A couple of photos enclosed to show my limited planking skills! needed a little bit of filler especially near the bow. Let's hope the second layer will be an improvement! Will post again when more of the planking has been completed. Xander xander attached the following image(s):

Looks good to me Xander as long as the first planking is nice and smooth it should be no problem . Looking forward to seeing your next update Rgd Martyn Building ? Completed. Soliei Royal . And so planking continues. The first layer is complete with the aid of some filler and a lot of sanding. And so the second layer begins and when finished it was sanded, stained with an Antique Pine stain and then a coat of satin varnish applied. xander attached the following image(s):

Nice work Xander, looks well after second planks. What I find to keep the beauty of the natural wood colour is to use Danish oil instead of varnish. It gives the same satin finish but brings out the couloir of the wood. Acrylic varnish doesn't. I do four coats with wire wool in between.
