I am a wee bit away from the Rigging, but I am doing a bit of research, My first job is to start the Yards, The drawing supplied is not full size, for example, a yard showing a dimension size of 290mm on the drawing only measures 265mm on the drawing, why they could not have had a full size drawing beats me, when they get that close to it. Also the drawing is not marked " NOT TO SCALE ". I have had to get the drawing blown up full size at the printers, so I can have a drawing to work to. Trying to get the positions of the blocks etc is not easy when its not to scale.

Watch out for this one, the first yard I cut, I cut to the length on the drawing, checking it against the picture, without checking the dimension shown, got caught out and will have to order another bit of dowel and remake.
Will keep you posted

Looking good Mo. We all get things a little wrong now and again and have to redo or re-order parts. At least it was spotted now and now when it was being placed onto the ship.... .. Look forward to seeing your progress.... Regards Alan

I am using a lathe to reduce and taper the yards, I am only using sandpaper to shape the timber, moving the sandpaper left and right to get the correct size, I have rings to fit on to the yards, so i have to ensure that i get the right diameter at the correct points, so as they slip on to the correct position.

Yard all tapered, sanded, varnished, I have lost the varnish I was using before, so bought another one, I think this one might be a bit dark, I will get the boat out in daylight and compare, I may just give the rest of the yards I coat.
I have also glued on the metal rings, and prepared the blocks.

Thanks Grandale & Sticky Wickett for your comments, Its been so long since I have done any serious building, that I have forgotten some of the skills involved, Anyway I have now finished my first Yard. I am just starting to remember some of the things I learnt early in my build, A lot of which I learnt on this blog, The hardest part of this task for me, was the brass wire for the foot holds on the underside of the yards, Can anyone help with the correct name for the rope the Sailors stand on when they are up on the yards. Anyway I tried the Brass wire supplied but I felt it was to stiff, to hard to work with, I then tried the copper wire, it was easier to work with, but I was still was not happy with the results, so I stripped them of and did them in White thread.
This is the copper wire effort, quite hard to work with.

I found this a lot easier to do, and I think its a better finish.

I wound the thread around a 1mm drill,

I then pushed it all up tight,

I then put super glue on to the thread, quite thin, the thread absorbed the glue and the thread solidify, You then have to try and remove the thread from the drill. It wasn't till I had done a couple, that I remembered how I did it before. I used to put a little jig behind the thread to enable me to get the thread of.

You then pull the jig and it removes the thread, leaving a small tube of thread.

I then cut the tube to length.

I then got some more of the thread, and hardened the tip of the thread with thin superglue, and when hard cut the end at a 45 degree angle, this enabled me to slide the thread in to the tube,

I then pushed it back through the tube

trapped a 1mm drill to form the hole,

Removed the drill, super glued the loop, just to harden it, removed the drill.

And cut of the spare leg of thread.

Thats how i did it, and stuck it on to the yard.

My first completed Yard, hopefully the next ones will be better, as I get back into the rhythm, The black foot hold thread, is only in for effect, and will be done properly as and when I get to that part of the build.

Oooophs, One last thing I have to do, drill out all the blocks on the yard, to ensure that none of the holes got blocked up with glue or crap, I am now putting a label on it, and putting it away. on to the next one.
